A wonderful, insightful book, full of every emotion you could think of. Mike was such a character, and this book portrays that so well.

A wonderful, insightful book, full of every emotion you could think of. Such a shame his life ended before he could achieve the things he wanted to achieve in the last pages of his book. At least he had a good life though, and is at peace now with his loved ones.

Reid, Mike, 1940-2007, Television actors and actresses, Comedians.

I have always liked and admired Mike Reid and since reading his book he has gone right to the top of my admiration table. This book tells of his life as a child, doing things he shouldn't be doing, to his life as an adult which at times was not much better than his younger days. A truly brilliant masterpiece from a man who has the power to make you laugh one minute, turn the page and your eyes feel with tears.

Since his overnight success over thirty-five years ago, after appearing on national TV in The Comedians, Mike Reid has remained one of Britain's most popular and best-loved comics. His popularity soared to new heights when he was asked to appear as pub landlord Frank Butcher in the BBC TV soap EastEnders. Born in Hackney, East London in 1940, Mike began a life of 'ducking of diving' to earn money almost as soon as he could walk

Born in Hackney, East London in 1940, Mike began a life of 'ducking of diving' to earn money almost as soon as he could walk. He learned to earn his living by his own wit and street-wise cunning, avoiding a police record until, aged sixteen, he was caught red-handed ram raiding a jewellers shop. The result was two years correction in an approved school in Wales. At seventeen he fled a disastrous teenage marriage and joined the Merchant Navy, where he got his first taste of showbiz, becoming director of entertainment. Back home Mike became involved in the London drinking club scene. His acquaintances included the notorious Krays, Ronnie Knight and the Nash family. It was then too he met his present wife, Shirley. In an effort to support her, Mike turned his back on the criminal world. After some string-pulling he landed a job as a stunt driver, and featured in many major films a

Mike Reid has led a fascinating life. He was the ordinary East End kid who grew up to be a man in a somewhat functional family. His father had planned him to take him to Scotland on his truck but when Mike is punished by his mother. He can't go and thankfully it was the wisest decision. His father barely survived a tragic accident that kept him unable to work and the family just financially surviving. Sadly, Mike Reid passed away in Spain from a heart attack. This book is a touching tribute to his legacy from the Comedians to his thankless role as Frank Butcher on the British soap, East Enders. He admits the difficulty working on a soap that has long days and that even the finest of actors and actresses break down because they can't handle it. Mike never got his British honor like his co-stars Barbara Windsor MBE, Wendy Richard MBE, Mona Hammond OBE, and Rudolf Walker OBE but he doesn't seem to mind it one bit. His personal life is most candid especially since he writes about the loss of his beloved son, Mark, and granddaughter, Kristy Anne. He also writes about his two marriages, the second has lasted for over 40 years. He writes about his time in Brixton Prison in London for his crimes and his relationship with the notorious Kray brothers. Mike writes about visiting America and loving it there but he never begrudges that he never got his fame. It was not until East Enders that he became a serious, well-respected actor among his peers. When he's not dramatic, he's a natural at stand-up comedy. He was one of the first of British stand-up comedians. He doesn't bash anybody else in this book but I think he's hardest on himself. He writes about the complicated relationship between his mother and himself. Still, I think he deserved something for services to entertainment by the Queen but I don't think it would matter to Mike.
