I HAD A BALL is full of stories no one but Michael would know. Michael Stern lived my dream in the Hollywood heyday. Not only his friendship with Lucille Ball, but all of the other actors and actresses that he had a chance to meet

I HAD A BALL is full of stories no one but Michael would know. His friendship with Mom is evident on every page. Not only his friendship with Lucille Ball, but all of the other actors and actresses that he had a chance to meet. I have been watching anything Lucy all my life and don't have the words to express how I feel about her comic genius. She truly was and still is the most amazing comedienne of our time; from her zany antics right down to her facial expressions, you could tell she loved her craft and because of that, made all of us love her.

I found this book after just coming from a book about Lucille Ball and Palm Springs. This is a must read for any Lucy fan. I have a home in Palm Springs and I wanted to know more about the Lucille Ball tie-in to the Coachella Valley. Unfortunately, that book didn't tell me much I didn't already know, however, I found Michael Stern's book by accident and that's a completely different story altogether.

I found this book after just coming from a book about Lucille Ball and Palm Springs. I have a home in Palm Springs and I wanted to know more about the Lucille Ball tie-in to the Coachella Valley. Unfortunately, that book didn't tell me much I didn't already know, however, I found Michael Stern's book by accident and that's a completely different story altogether. "I Had A Ball" is a sweet, friendly, honest story that talks about the real Lucille Ball, as she was in her own home, the way she cared about friends and family, and even the love she had for her pets. Stern gives the reader a glimpse of what it was like to know Ball in a more intimate way that I've never read before in any other book about her. And I read a lot of non-fiction. I write or edit fiction all day long in real life and the non-fiction books I read give me a balance. This book, without a doubt, kept me turning the pages of the Kindle app on my iPhone so fast I hated to see it end. I can't recommend it enough, especially if you're a devoted fan of all things Lucy. You really get to know Lucille Ball as Lucille Morton, Gary's wife...and Lucie and Desi's mom. And you'll wind up loving her even more.

This was a very enjoyable book. It was a glimpse into the life of Lucille Ball in a personal way. I think it is amazing how the author, Michael Stern, got to know Lucy and many other stars. Being a life long fan of Lucille Ball, I could not help but envy his involvement and friendship with Lucy. I did see Lucy in person in 1985 in a NY airport. She was waiting for her baggage at the same area as I. She was at the 9 o'clock position and I was at the 6 o'clock position . She did not make any eye contact with me and she stared blankly ahead. We were the only two people at that spot. I respected her privacy and did not try to talk to her. To think we were on the same flight from California and she was near to me was thrill enough.

This is a must read for any Lucy fan. The beautiful friendship they shared and mutual love and respect for each other is so moving. He shows us what the real Lucy (and her family and friends) were really like. I don't think there has ever been a closer, more loyal group in Hollywood before her or since. I was a huge I Love Lucy fan and was always so sad she and Desi divorced; however after reading about Gary in this book you come to love their relationship and him. What a wonderful, loving, kind, gracious family they were - beginning with Lucy's mom who was sweet and thoughtful enough to introduce a young boy to his idol and never forget him. I smiled, laughed, cried, and DEFINITELY didn't want this book to end. Thanks for sharing your special memories of Lucy with the rest of her fans. You've done her proud!!!

When I first saw this book I thought it would be written by just another person wanting to show off how they knew Lucy. I was so wrong! This book was great from beginning to end. You won't be disappointed.
Interesting book - I have read countless books on Lucy and had never heard of Michael Stern - very sweet, touching story how their friendship evolved and progressed to the end of her amazing life.
