I enjoyed reading this, and would like to read more about both the ideas and the life of Eliade. The nature of the journal is such, that one feels immersed in the times and places the author describes. It was interesting and touching to see the extent to which Eliade's Orthodox Christian background sometimes emerges in his personal thoughts, even if he maintains a scholarly distance from it in other places, and doesn't appear to be a Church-goer in any practicing sense. This is the first complete book by Eliade which I've read, and it made me curious to know more about what he really believed on the religious level, which hopefully can be found out elsewhere in the bibliography. His 'fascist' leanings are also explored, in a way which may at times make left-leaning readers uncomfortable, since it can become quite apparent that Eliade was a human being first and foremost, very understandably worried that his native Romania will be colonised by the Soviets and seeing Nazi Germany as a preferable option, an aspiration which at times - looking through the author's eyes - it becomes hard not to share, for all its likely historical error (since even oppression by Soviet Russia was ultimately probably preferable to the sort of regime the Nazis would have set up, though it was a choice between a rock and a hard place). In all, I was left with a favourable impression of a profound and complex personality, one who both fully lived and affected his times. I wanted to read more, and ultimately I really would have loved meeting him: and I think that says a lot about the value of this journal.
