The Naked Buddha book. the teachings of the Buddha without any cultural trappings or religious overtones. Difficult ideas to aspire to as a way of finding spiritual peace: everything interconnected but constantly changing; no permanency; no constant; no soul; no god; no "thing" except in relation to every other thing and all changing and impacting on everything else every nanosecond; taking comfort (?) from the universality of suffering; and needing to find personal responsibility for right mindedness and right actions.

Structured in a basic Q&A format, Adrienne Howley's "The Naked Buddha" is a fairly good introduction to the basic tenets of Buddhism, although I felt like she was biased a bit towards the Theravada variant. Not bad but not really a diamond lightening bolt either.

but for what ever reason she wanted to know more about Buddhism so she found a temple nearby and called in she was rather overwhelmed by everything that was going on an the brightly coloured statues there were people chanting in a language she did not know the smell of incense was in the temple also she was requested to take her shoes off at the door although that she knew was also done in mosques incense is used in small amounts in Christian churches and until the 1960's the catholic mass was spoken n Latinshe eventually felt so strongly about being a Buddhist she became ordained as a Buddhist nun by the Dalai Lama she felt there was a need for a book that could take away the glitz and confusion of the temple and put what goes on in a temple into layman terms this is what is ment by naked in the title

a fantastic book and audiobook that extracts from the vast miasma of cultural nonsense that has accumulated around "Buddhism" the pure and delicate flower of Buddha's actual teaching. i will be grateful to the Venerable Adrienne Howley for this beautiful gem to the end of my days.

The book is bare bones simple. More on the Buddha than actually Buddhism, but a great 'intro'. I say 'intro', its great for any level or degree you take it or have taken it the lifestyle, philosophy and way. Some good insight on the roots and answers a lot of questions... very purist.

Easy to read and understand. This book delivers the basics of Buddhism without strange vocabulary or strange delivery. I recommend this book for those that are studying or are about to study buddhism.

I would have rated this product higher if the price had been more reasonable. This audio book is only 5 hours long. For $40 I expected 10-12 hours of information. There are several other fine introductions to Buddhism in the $10-20 range, offered here, that are better values.

Aside from the price, this is a good introduction to the teachings of Gautama. It would be well worth about $15.

This book was easy to read and understand the different principals of Buddhism. Someone every beginner should have on the table.

Coming from a secular perspective, Howley strips away political and cultural influences from the basic teachings of the Buddha. This book gives a short history of Buddhism to show how the different traditions arose and colored the practice of Buddhism. Howley plainly and concisely gets down to the basic teachings.
The writing is very simplistic. I felt like it was written for a child.
