I have not finished the book, but the opening is the most powerful opening of a non-fiction book I have run across. As we age (71 here), we find that accumulated experiences give us insight into how we might have lived better lives. That wisdom, however, is too late for us. It is not too late, though, to use that experience to mentor our children judiciously and the like with our grandchildren, nor is it too late to use that experience to affect public policy.. Love and knowledge are powerful drivers of my life and the lives of those I care about. My grandfather and I talked into the night about knowledge and how it could or should be applied to help others. He led troops in two warks. He had standing to share his wisdom with me. Bertrand Russell, in talking about his life, recalls to me my talks with my grandfather in the backwoods of Virginia to where he had retired. The increasing calls for justice in the civil rights movement and the resistance to the leadership of his beloved military challenged his thinking. Like Russell, he was honest. In seeing how Russell developed, we can challenge ourselves at opportune times to act better than we previously imagined we might have. Russell's much marked up opening chapters provide candid templates to do this.

This is a classic; a must read for philosophy lovers. This book together with The History of Western Philosophy provide more than an introduction to what Russell calls : "Philosophy, the bridge between Science and Theology".

Not only Russell's autobiography but the history of the era spanned by his life, the history of philosophy, etc. No more time to review this one. It's a must-read, as far as I'm concerned. It takes a while -- very long. Unfortunately, the print in the edition I bought is teeny-tiny, which makes it hard to read.

This book is surprisingly entertaining. Some of it no doubt goes over my head, but that's OK. There's enough in my head as it is. Also, the vendor did a terrific job. They sent me a book in really fine condition and they sent it post haste. Now if I could only find a plumber who would work pro bono.

I hate philosophy but I love math. So this book dragged in places. But his personal life is very interesting. Also there are letters from all sorts of people and in most cases I did no know who they were. But the environment at Cambridge was interesting, and the lifestyle of Russell and his friends as they trotted all over Europe and America. Also you get a picture of his grandparent's generation.

We've turned into a world full of TV talk shows, cooking shows, and rating performers like Beyonce and Miley Cyrus; we dote on Oprah and Ellen because they give their audiences free gifts. Shame on us. Read about people like Bertrand Russell and Viktor Frankl and try to broaden your horizons, please.
