My first book, Life After Birth-A Memoir of Survival and Success as a Teenage Mother, details my journey as an insecure young girl, scared teen mother, and successful young woman who surpassed everyone’s expectations. I became a mother when I was 15 after a forced sexual encounter. Although it was hard as a teen mother and I wanted to give up at times, I graduated from high school in my class and with highest honors and was named Most Likely to Succeed. I earned the Emerging Leaders scholarship to college, graduated magna cum laude in four years, and was named Miss University of Memphis.

Going to school, hanging out with her friends, and being a normal teenager was all Summer knew until her fifteenth birthday changed her life forever. Nine months later, she was a mother and didn't even know the father of her baby. Overcoming embarrassment and depression, she made the decision to go on with her life and pursue the dreams she had before taking on the responsibilities of motherhood. In Life After Birth, Owens depicts the real-life struggles she faced as a teenage mother in hopes that her transparency will encourage and inspire other teenage and single mothers. By sharing how she managed to give her son the best childhood possible while at the same time finishing high school, combating emotional issues, graduating from college with honors, building a career and buying a house all as a young, single mother, she demonstrates that life doesnt have to end when a child is born to a teenager.

This book is excellently written with intricate detail of the author's childhood issues. Most of these issues are not unique to her as many pre-pubescent and adolescent girls face these same issues. This is what makes it interesting. The struggles with body image, teasing and bullying are universal. Most people will relate. I think that this book is rich in its potential for bibliotherapy and group and individual counseling. There are many themes and issues which arise such as assertiveness, self esteem and refusal and these themes can serve as a springboard for teaching Life Skills. Most of all, Life after birth is inspirational as it details the struggle, sacrifice and determination of one young lady who insisted on transforming her oppositional circumstances into opportunity. Summer Owens is indeed an encapsulation of the statement by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,

Heights by great men reached and kept were not obtained by sudden flight but, while their companions slept, they were toiling upward in the night.

Life After Birth was an amazing book. Being a teen mom, I could not only relate to the things the author went through, but I also learned I could achieve all of my dreams. Most books and television shows make teen pregnancy and being a teen mother all "rainbows and butterflies" and it is not. I was happy to see that the author did not sugar coat any of the struggles she went through. 1 out of 3 girls who have a baby before they are 18 will more than likely have another kid by the time she is 20. She teaches teen moms that having a baby does not mean you have to give up on all of your dreams. I LOVED that she made a point to include that the government assistance that people receive should not become a crutch for them, but help them until they can afford to survive on their owns. I have and will recommend this book to not only teen moms, but moms in general.

Greatly enjoyed this read! I hope every young man or woman will read this void and discover the importance of abstinence, but also the importance of acceptance, should a teen pregnancy become reality.

I enjoyed reading this book for several reasons. The first I can relate to this becoming a teen mom at 16 years old. I collegiate author uses scriptures to help begin each chapter. Another thing I like how she summarizes the main points in very simple words. This book gave me a lot of visuals just from the descriptive words for each scene I could paint a picture. The story is very inspiring to young teen mothers not to give up on their lives if they become pregnant.

I love the honesty, transparency and hope that is shared through her experiences.
Even if you aren't a teenage mother I encourage you to read this. It is a story of hope and determination. It pushes you to wan to be the best you can be regardless of your situation.
