Great historic stories and I love the listing of the mansions in Newport. There are a lot of them that aren't listed in other books, so I am able to drive and know what I am seeing.

I find it fascinating to read about the history of Newport especially the Gilded age when the rich and famous dallied in Newport.

I think this book is best for someone who has either visited several of the Newport mansions already, or already knows something about the Newport Gilded Age society. Even thought he book is pretty short, I can imagine someone not familiar with the subject getting a little lost. I had read Fortunes Children, which was fantastic, but it didn't tell much about the less scandalous Vanderbilts. Gavan's book filled in the gaps, and also gave a quick and easy run down on the other characters. Visiting the mansions is so much more fun knowing about the owners, especially Marble House and the Breakers. Enjoy.
