I bought this almost 50 year old book because it was recommended in another 50 year old book by Theodore White. While the book does recount the discoveries of Isaac Newton, it attempts to be a psychological portrait of the man, and, at times, seems to get caught up in the postwar Freudian speak that was popular then. Since this can get a bit tedious, I was tempted to give the book three stars, but the author has done an excellent job of research and uncovered new material that helps to more fully frame Newton, and I feel this pushes it up a notch.

Because of the book I feel I know Newton well enough to state that I'm glad I didn't work for him or with him. He was a very imperfect man, which, perhaps, is why Principia is near perfection.
"A Portrait of Isaac Newton," (1968), by Frank E. Manuel, is a tome about Newton, and from the book cover inside flap:
"...Manuel's classic portrait goes well beyond Newton's stunning achievements in optics, chemistry, and mathematics and focuses on Newton the man, his personality his worldview, and his eccentric style of life." "An element of speculation is consciously interwoven in this portrayal," which to me makes this book un-readable.

Having said that, Manuel put a lot into this book but I found it a bit pedantic, with burdensome, voluminous, unnecessary, footnotes and many extended quotations in the text, making this book very difficult to read. Also there are some "interesting" ideas put forth by Manuel,
e.g., pages 86-87:
"While the story of the apple dropping in the garden as recounted by the aged Newton is prosaic enough and he lived in apple country, it is impossible to ignore the religious overtones of a theory of the universe called forth by the fruit that at once occasioned man's fall into mortal sin and led to worldly knowledge." This book is full of sentences like this.

For other Newton biographies, see: 1. "Isaac Newton," (2003), by James Gleick, which provides on up to date, concise, biography of Newton and is recommended; and 2. "In the Presence of the Creator: Isaac Newton," (1984), Gale E. Christianson; 3. For an encyclopedia type book on Newton, see "The Newton Handbook," (1987), Derek Gjertsen.
