Lin Yutang (1895-1976) is perhaps best remembered today as an erudite interpreter of traditional Chinese culture whose work on Confucianism opened the eyes of many Western readers to philosophical concerns in the Far East. Like Chiang Yee (the "Silent Traveller" who visited many locales in the Occident with paint-brushes in hand), Lin is strikingly interested in the small contrasting details of daily life and thinking. This work on "The Wisdom of America" is his compilation of writings by Thoreau, Santayana, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and others whom he sees as best encapsulating American thinking in the mid-20th century. One wonders what Lin might have thought of contemporary China and its turn to the rampant capitalism so frequently--and erroneously--associated with the United States.
