This is frankly one of the most interesting books ever written. I am from South Carolina and grew up in the area where Gaskins committed his so called Coastal Kills. I've read many books written about serial killers and this is truly one of the most interesting. An alternate title for this book could be "How to Raise a Serial Killer from Cradle to Grave." This book is graphic and shocking and not for the weak of stomach. Gaskins spares no details in his descriptions of his many murders and tortures. He also spares no details about the childhood that he lived before becoming the monster he grew up to be. The most amazing twist (and believe me there are plenty twists) to the story of Gaskins is that he wasn't executed by the State of South Carolina for any of the tortuous murders he claimed to have committed, he was executed by the State of South Carolina for killing an inmate who was already on death row. You will shake your head in disgust and you will shake your head in amazement as you read this book. The images left in my head after reading this book will stay with me forever. The messages left behind in this book should be debated for many years to come. As troubling as this story is, it will make you think hard about everything from crime and punishment in the United States, to the Death penalty , to the extreme gaps that exist between poverty and wealth in America. One thing is for sure, once you start to read this book, you won't be able to put it down.

Personally, I believe there are people in this world who are abosulutley unredeemable human beings. Gaskins is a perfect example of such a person. The big debate though that will forever be pondered is "Was it nature or nurture?" The world may never know, and there are many people who really don't care. Gaskins is gone forever, but if you believe his story, sadly there are many more people like him walking amonst us. Read this book.

I bought this book to learn more about Pee Wee because he was active near where I live. I ended up doing extensive research on him, because I thought he left some very viable clues to some of his “unsolved murders” in this book. After chasing numerous leads he provided that turned out to be false, I have concluded that Pee Wee was full of bull. But he once said that he liked to mix the feces with the chocolate ice cream to keep the law from knowing which was which. And there is no doubt that he was a terrible human being, predatory killer, child molester and the most despicable form of life. But add to all of this him being a chronic liar … I put his body count at less than 19, and that is if you count the guy his supposedly killed in prison (which I have found no proof of) and the unborn baby of one of his other victims. This is a good book to give you a glimpse into the mind of a killer, but take it all with a grain of salt.

Pee Wee Gaskins is probably the most infamous serial killer in South Carolina history. This "as-told-to" book was published posthumously. I've talked to a number of people over the years who knew Pee Wee personally and/or worked on his cases in some capacity. He was not known for telling the truth, so despite the fact that he supposedly had nothing to lose by delaying publication until after his execution, most people I have talked to believe he greatly exaggerated the number of people he claims to have killed in this book. Having said that, if even half of what he claims is true, this is still one of the most disturbing true-crime books I have ever read. Parts of it left me chilled to the bone. It also helps answer the question of what causes a human mind to go so bad. After reading about his up-bringing, you realize that a deeply disturbed mind is often the result of a deeply disturbed childhood. This book should be read by anyone who is interested in delving into the psyche of a serial killer. However, I don't recommend reading it before going to sleep at night. Your dreams are going to be troubled for a while.

This book is a true story of violence, sexual abuse and murder. It is graphic at times, though the real challenge for me was to accept that another human could think the way Gaskins did. I was loaned this book long ago and purchased it recently for a friend. I would purchase it for my own library if it ever goes to print again.

Two conclusions come to mind after reading this book. Did Pee Wee Gaskin commit the evil he described? I say yes. Did he kill 110 people? I doubt it. First, I believe Pee Wee maybe committed the 30 or so murders he describes in the book. His horrible descriptions of what he did to his victims certainly qualifies him as, "the meanest man in South Carolina". However, it is a stretch to believe that another 80 murders could have occurred without bodies, witnesses or even a missing persons report to be found. With so many hunters, fishermen and other outdoors types in South Carolina in those days, could have a least one of those had witnessed one of Pee Wee's "coastal kills"?
I think Pee Wee [just] wanted to join the Big League and has apparently done so by writing this book. There are serial killer websites and legions of internet groupies who have taken his claim of 110 victims at face value to proclaim him one of the worst serial killers in history. I believe author Wilton Earle has abetted this legend by not properly researching and verifying Pee Wee's claims. This is inexcusable since Earle claims to be an experienced journalist.
Equal blame, however, goes to South Carolina's law enforcement agencies who have declined to follow up on the info provided in the book. In an article about the book in the Charlotte Observer dated April 22, 1992, the Sheriff of Florence County is quoted as dismissing Pee Wee's claims as so much lies. Could it be that the last thing they would want is to admit that Pee Wee got away with it for so long? Or that it's possible that South Carolina's tourism industry doesn't want people to think there are others like him out there that haven't been caught?
The truth to all this lies somewhere in between. But you won't find it in "Final Truth".
