I received this book after one of the authors did an 'ask me anything' on a law school forum I frequent. My perspective is that of a recent law graduate who has been considering compliance work instead of traditional firm work.

First off, I think this book gives a really good overview of what compliance is, terminology, and the sort of demands compliance has regardless of what your speciality may be. I used to work in a large corporation with internal compliance audits so much of this was a refresher for me, but I still think this will be useful for recent graduates who have no familiarity with the profession.

Also, when I began researching how to approach my job search, I found myself in the dark as to what positions I was qualified to do and consequently apply for. Thankfully, the book briefly went over the common positions in compliance, what their responsibilities are, and the general hierarchy.

I think that's what this book does best: it provides very basic, practical direction in an area that is not traditionally explored by most academic institutions and consequently many students and, later, graduates either (a) don't know it exists, or; (b) are overwhelmed by the prospect of even beginning a job search in the area. Most compliance folks I know sort of 'fell into' their job and this provides a more concrete description of how one can be far more calculating in their approach.

This is especially true in law school, where there is a large emphasis (understandably) on how to be a good lawyer in a typical firm setting, set alongside a system of mentorship and guidance. In contrast, getting into compliance has felt like more of a free-fall despite the skill-set lawyers and JDs can offer in a compliance setting. There's no substitute for knowing people and talking to them directly, but this book is a decent substitute and also includes ways to build those relationships, giving the reader ways to control their foray into compliance.

Finally, I have used this book to refine my resumes and cover letters since I have a better understanding of my audience. It's no secret when applying to firms or other law organizations the keywords you need to use: research, memoranda, briefs, drafting, writing, etc etc. Obviously many of these skills should likewise be emphasized in compliance (e.g, communication skills, research, and so forth) but I now have ways to better illustrate how I would properly and successfully apply them in a compliance setting. I think the specificity likewise shows a familiarity with the area and that I haven't been applying as a last-ditch whim.

I should note that, while I think this is a good purchase for law-oriented professionals, the majority of the book has general applicability and pretty much anybody seriously considering compliance should consider purchasing it. It's a fast read, easy to navigate, and provides useful resources beyond the book.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I felt it was a great introduction to compliance and how the field is growing. I currently work in a university compliance office as a student, and I'm somewhat interested in continuing to work in compliance as a career. The general information about compliance in the book matched my current work experience in compliance. The book also contained information that I feel will be helpful if I choose to pursue a career in compliance.
