This is an important subject. I just don't think this book is going to help many people on a journey to excellence.

None of these are present in this book. There is a promise on the front flap to "redefine what it means to be a true professional. I never found this new definition. This is an important subject. 13 people found this helpful.

But according to Subroto Bagchi, our increasingly global marketplace demands more. By exploring a variety of professional dilemmas across many industries, Bagchi defines the qualities of true professionals and the attributes that separate them from the merely competent. In a world where the foolish, selfish, and unethical decisions of a few have affected the lives of millions, The Professional urges readers to act responsibly and reexamine "business as usual".

Another excellent book by Subroto Bagchi. Written in a simple and effective style, this book is a quick guide on what aspects a "professional" needs to bear in mind. As usual, Subroto Bagchi draws inspiration and quotes not just from business but a lot from life. In fact, one of the first examples we read is about a person who handles unwanted corpses in Bangalore. Only Bagchi could connect professionalism with such a mundane, absolutely-not-sexy subject. Throughout the book we see examples from Another excellent book by Subroto Bagchi

Setting new standards of professionalism is the need of the hour.

The accepted definition of a professional refers to a person who has the specific knowledge and the right skill sets to do a job. Typically, this includes a coveted degree from some reputed university and/or years of hands-on experience. Setting new standards of professionalism is the need of the hour. Through his book, Bagchi seeks to help people achieve higher standards as professionals.

In the new era, where every person's actions have the potential to have a global impact, we must redefine what it means to be a true professional. By common definition, a professional is someone who possesses the skills and knowledge necessary to do a job-whether it's a top degree from a prestigious university or simply years of on-the-job training. Today, it takes more than just aptitude-it takes a commitment to doing what's right, not only for your business, but for society as a whole.

A manifesto on what it takes to be a true professional in the modern world. By common definition, a professional is anyone who possesses the skills and knowledge necessary for a career-whether as a surgeon, a software engineer, or a plumber. But according to Subroto Bagchi, our increasingly global marketplace demands more. These include: *Suffer no false attractions: It's always tempting to take the path of least resistance, but true professionals can separate the genuine from the phony. *Know when to say no: True professionals are not afraid to say no to things that are not worth their time, their energy, or their creativity. *Take the long view: True professionals understand that every action, decision, and relationship, no matter how small, can have a lasting impact.

Concepts of professionalism which we all know but may sometimes have trouble articulating are neatly embodied by the stories the author has gathered from his own experience.

The chapters of this book are broken into short 3-5 page stories that Bagchi uses to illustrate aspects of professionalism. I've enjoyed reading one or two at a time, taking them as food for thought and inspiration for striving to improve. One of the things I've noticed in the upper echelons of grad school is that tunnel vision and burn-out are pretty common, so it's always a pleasure to find a book that has the potential to rekindle enthusiasm for sticking to deadlines and putting full effort into work every day.

It's not really a groundbreaking boook, as advice like this circulates all the time, but it does a nice job of framing it for the present and lending some perspective to what underlies standards of professionalism.

Sad to say, I found this book very disappointing. There is really nothing new or noteworthy here, just a lot of fatherly advice and thin examples. A professional writing a book with this title would reference research, include citations, explain new ideas in depth, or at the very least include an index. None of these are present in this book.

There is a promise on the front flap to "redefine what it means to be a true professional." I never found this new definition. I certainly can find plenty of books on excellence and expertise and integrity that inspire and teach and define much better than "we follow the rules. Where rules do not exist, we use fair judgment. When in doubt, we do not go ahead and do what suits us; we seek counsel. Finally, faced with a difficult choice, we ask ourselves: Can my act stand public scrutiny without causing embarrassment to me and my family" (p. 24). Gee, thanks Dad. This is not exactly groundbreaking stuff -- and there is no discussion of how to actually learn and execute excellence in everyday operations.

This is an important subject. I just don't think this book is going to help many people on a journey to excellence. I hope that as you relentlessly chase perfection, you will catch excellence (a Vince Lombardi phrase), and I hope you find this review useful.
