When I first started reading this book, I almost cried at how dry and boring it was. However, I finally got over that and was able to stay awake long enough to keep up with the readings for my class. Overall, this text book offers a lot of information on database management - from conceptual modeling to SQL DDL and DML to physical schema considerations and data warehousing. I think it is a great intro text for anyone getting into the DBA game. The section on SQL was more in-depth than I thought it would be and even gets into co-related nested queries and working with some useful functions.

I am a 30 year veteran electronic systems programmer helping my kid get through business school. This may be the most poorly written and organized technical book I've ever come across. It bears no resemblence to a thoughtfully constructed training tool, just chapter after chapter of poorly explained concepts and graphics that don't correlate well with the text. And It's pretty much like reading the mortgage papers that come with your house, boring & tedious. If you are a teacher who actually cares about training your students in this subject (not many of you out there) then this is a great way to waste their time so find something else. If you're not embarassed then teach out of SQL for IDIOTS. Your students will more than likely need to buy it anyway to figure out what's really going on. As far as I can figure out it's pretty easy put together a database without declaring whether or not this field has a tertiary relationship with something else. I'm willing to bet that a database programmer uses the word tertiary exactly zero times in his career. But this book is the bible of babble.

I used this book extensively in my advanced database design class in grad school. It was excellent and I put most of it to good use on the job including the type entity classification. I did not have an opportunity to use its database maintenance and scaling suggestions.

My instructor didn't require a textbook for class, but he recommends getting this book as the "database" information hasn't changed greatly and he still gives homework assignments from this book. His lectures come mostly from the book, so having the book in-hand has helped me study.

good condition

Good enough to get me through the class, not good enough to keep.

This book provides an excellent foundation to the principles of database and data management. It explains some of the more difficult concepts quite well. I understand there is a newer edition, and as with all computer books, would generally recommend newer sources, but in this case I would recommend this one.
