Encyclopedia guessed that the jeweler was lying when he said he hadn’t read the articles about the Roman-Numeral Robber. Not only had he read them, the stories had given him the idea to stage a copycat robbery in his own store. The jeweler made his second mistake when he wrote the date at the top of the note. Instead of writing XXIV for June 24, the jeweler wrote XXIIII. Encyclopedia remembered that jewelers often use IIII instead of IV when designing watches. It's amazing, these books have been around forever. Yet our 7 and 10 year old grand children love them. They were really disappointed that I could not read Encyclopedia while driving them home from school. So I have started to record and burn to them CD, and now we listed to them in the car. "Hey grandpa, it's time for another Encyclopedia Brown case!"

I read these with my seven-year-old. They are a fun way to practice exercise and logic. There are some turns of phrase and technology that are a bit dated in some books, which gives us a chance to talk about these things. I loved these books when I was a kid.

From my eight year old son -- I really liked the last mystery because the lifeguard yelled at Benny's cousins.

From mom -- this collection of mysteries is clever for young kids. The cast of recurring characters from books to books make these stories easy to fall into while also making them instantly familiar. The mysteries can be silly for adults but my son is enthralled.

You really need brain knowledge to solve these cases. I want to be like Encyclopedia Brown (real name Leroy Brown) who can solve all the cases. I have to admit, I had trouble with more than half the cases on this book. I like the idea of the "solutions" pages. So if the reader has trouble, he/she can go to the solution for the case. There is other "crime" sort of things such as when Wilford Wiggins tries to cheat little kids out of their savings. Also, there's Bugs Meany, who tries to steal kids' things.Leroy Brown's dad is Chief of Police in Idaville. There are many crimes that happen, like kidnapping, stealing, murdering, etc.
