Its influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an X, schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders. Help a hapless pirate crew navigate its way to intergalactic treasure.

The pirate starship Sleepy Sheep is on the hunt for intergalactic riches. Scattered across an exotic treasure planet are dozens of pirate chests. But only ten contain real booty. Armed with ten maps, our motley crew needs all the help they can get to find the goods before their enemies do.

Young readers are invited to join the hunt in Space Pirates by following the clues to find the treasure. Each double-page challenge develops basic map-reading skills, how to follow a compass, using a map key, and tracking a grid reference. Only by solving the map puzzles can readers help the hapless pirates nab the treasure before their nemesis, the evil pirate, One Hand Hulke, gets his hook into the booty.

Full of busy cartoon-style pictures in the Where's Waldo? tradition, challenging puzzles, and a memorable cast of characters, Space Pirates is a treasure hunt that's out of this world.

This book was amazing! It kept the interest of my Kindergartener for over 30 minutes while we worked our way through it. I was also pleased (and surprised) by his ability to work through the map reading tasks. The story was silly and fun, while the different map tasks were gratifying and moved the "plot" forward. Hope there are more of these!

We LOVE Scoular Anderson and this book does not disappoint. We have "Castle Mac Pelican" and have another on order. These are very good for keeping a pre-reader interested in books. My 5-year old is on the very of reading indedendently and he loves to have you read him the puzzle and then look for it on his own. The drawings are cartoon-like and very cute. Mr. Anderson must have a great imagination. This book takes a very long time on order, as it comes from the UK, I think ours took 6 weeks. We ordered another of Scoular's books, it still hasn't arrived, but I'm sure it will be worth the wait just as this was! Be patient and you'll be greatly satisfied.

I borrowed this book from the library for my 1st grader and cub scout. I thought it would be a good activity for map reading (as the title indicates) and a fun story too. It's kind of like those hidden picture books, except that the reader has precise directions that he/she needs to follow in order to find a treasure. This is a terrific book! The editorial recommendation is for kids 9-12. It's true that the text might be challenging for early readers, but I think it still provides an opportunity to make reading fun, and what could be better than that! My son enjoyed reading some of it, and having some of it read to him too. We both loved it. Now I'm looking for more books by this author. They would make great gifts.

My soon to be 8 years old son loves this book! While having fun to find treasure boxes by following the directions, they are learning how to read a map. Every page has a different challenges such as using ruler, reading compass etc.
Good for 1st grader or older.

I'm surprised not to see more reviews on this little treasure. The story is simple but the point is for your reader to follow clues and look at the detailed pictures. My 6 year old is having fun with because there's a routine on each page of completing little tasks. I already recommended it to friends and were only partly through it.
