com/c/VicStefanu - A few California sea lions began hauling out on PIER 39’s K-Dock shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit San Francisco in October 1989. By January 1990, the boisterous barking pinnipeds started to arrive in droves and completely took over K-Dock, much to the exasperation of PIER 39’s Marina tenants. Vic Stefanu, vstefanuo.

"The remarkable story of northern California's sea lion colony and their amazing relocation to San Francisco after the devastating earthquake of 1989 is chronicled in this lively book. Each year over 10 million visitors converge on the docks at Pier 39 to enjoy the barking, fighting, and playing of as many as 1,000 sea lions. Such fun questions as why most of the pier's sea lions are male, why they seem to fight all the time, and why they choose to remain in San Francisco are answered, and young students learn how injured sea lions are rescued, rehabilitated, and released; what these curious mammals eat; how fast and far they can swim; and who and what their enemies are."

Terrific book for intermediate readers. 26 pages of large illustrations, with about 5-6 lines of text per page, explaining the history of Sea lions coming to San Francisco's Pier 39, their diet, gestation, social life, menaces, etc. Includes 2-page glossary at the end of the book, defining words and terms such as porpoising. herding boards, blubber, Reise tags, etc.

Should interest children who are interested in animals, should encourage learning about animals. Great gift for adults to bring back from San Francisco for youngsters aged 7-9 or 10.

As a librarian in an Elementary and Junior High level Day school in
New York City, I have seen innumerable books, fiction and nonfiction.
It is wonderful to find informative non-fiction books that children
can understand easily while providing a challenge, and be enjoyable. All
three elements can be attributed to San Francisco's Famous Sea Lions.
I brought it to my library and several children have already shown
an interest. I love the book and give it five stars. Susan, NYC

Excellent book! I bought it because my grandaughter recently went to see the sea lions at the wharf in San Francisco with her mom and dad. She's almost 3. I wanted her to have a memory of her "adventure" in years to come. It was exactly what I was looking for, and she was so excited when the book arrived by mail!

The topic of this book is interesting to children. It deals with factual events, yet explains them in a manner that children can follow and enjoy. Characters (i.e., sea lions) with their own "personalities" are used to explain important conservation points.
This book is of particular interest to our children because of their interest in animals, particularly sea life. Pier 39 is now in our list of places to visit.

As an elementary school teacher, nonfiction material that is informative and entertaining is hard to find. This book with its wonderful illustrations opens many doors for discussions about animal behavior, adaptations, and their habitats.
