Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (22 April 1870 – 21 January 1924), better known by his alias Lenin, was a Russian revolutionary, politician, and political theorist. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a communist, he developed a variant of Marxism known as Leninism.
His real name is Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov. Lenin was the third of six children. Little Vladimir was baptized in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Books were expensive and Bonch-Bruyevich decided to use the funds of the state library. He was born in the town of Simbirsk in 1870 on 9 April (in 1918 a European-style calendar was adopted in the country, these days his birthday falls on 22 April). After Lenin’s death the city was renamed Ulyanovsk in tribute to its famous native. Lenin’s father, Ilya Nikolayevich Ulyanov, was a schoolmaster and made quite a career in education.

Lenin, born Vladimir Ilich Ulyanov on 22 April 1870 in Simbirsk, Russia, was the third of six children. Not long into his first term at Kazan University, Vladimir was arrested and expelled for participating in student protests against the Tsar. Both his mother and father were well educated and considered highly cultured. They instilled a love of learning in all of their children. Vladimir was a strong student, a voracious reader, and graduated at the top of his class.
