Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" is appropriate for ages 4+ (Grades K+). This classic tale teaches us that envy and jealousy will get us nowhere. I have never read the original version of this tale but I have seen the Disney movie version of this tale. Classic stories recorded by the Brothers Grimm are very different from many more recent versions. Recent tellings of the fairytale transform the evil queen into a dragon before the prince slays her with his sword. This villifies her a step further than her evil deeds and dehumanises her to a great extent; possibly making her death more acceptable and less traumatic for children.

I was not so impressed by the illustrations in this book - or by their layout (two pages illustrations, two pages only text alternating.) I think I simply did not like the style - which is not what is suggested by the cover drawing. I recommend looking through the book before purchasing. I feel the illustrations could have been more detailed - showing more events in the story. I ordered a new version instead illustrated by Angela Barrett.

Of course, one can get this story in many versions, and this version ends mercilessly, which might be off-putting for some people. However, the sublime beauty of the illustrations creates a consistent and entirely reasonable version of the fairy-tale world of the story. The crystalline windows, the rainbow of threads, and the ghostly final image linger in one's mind long after the book is closed.

I loved the book. It was so different from the Walt Disney version, yet it was so beautiful and moving. I wish there was a movie on the original version.
