Fred Van Lente (Goodreads Author), Graham Nolan (Illustrator). It is a easy book to read. Van Lente was raised by a mystery-loving mother (who preferred Dorothy Sayers to Agatha Christie, but we won't hold that against her) and a wisecracking Woody Allen-lookalike scientist father in what appears to be some kind of genetic experiment to write his first novel, TEN DEAD COMEDIANS, even though neither parent nor the son himself would know it for many.

The Bunker (Marvel Age Iron Man Set 3).

Fred Van Lente’s brilliant debut is both an homage to the Golden Age of Mystery and a thoroughly contemporary show-business satire. Tony Stark is bankrupted by Obadiah Stane. He starts to turn it around by investing in a disused factory. But, Stark has stepped into gangland territory. These villains known as the Pride, who pay homage to some goatfaced ancient beings known as the Gibborim (from Runaways), hire the Serpent Society to take out Tony Stark. Meanwhile, Reed Richards signs a cheque to help out Stark, despite some disgruntled voices from some terrifically superduper hero members of the Illuminati. Iron Man takes all this in his stride, including knocking down the pet T. Rex dinosaur of the Pride.

If you are able to put the above together, this book is for you. If not, you need to invest in an Official Guide to the Marvel Universe book to get a handle on things.

I'm not going to defend this as a particularly great piece of writing or art, but bottom line, I enjoyed reading this. The retro feel of bringing back some old villains- notably personal favorites of mine, the Serpent Society- and a return to Tony Stark after he has hit rock bottom but before he fully returns, makes it worth while. Especially notable is the way this truly captures Tony Starks ability to lead and inspire others. Unlike most of the Iron Man books where we're basically just told people admire and respect him, here we see him with nothing but the force of his personality, and that personality is clearly quite strong.

I am not a big Iron Man fan but this graphic novel was pretty good. As the product page states, this is about Anthony Stark attempting to find his way back in the world. Three stars from me is pretty good. Four stars would be very good and five stars would be excellent. If you are a true Iron Man fan and have followed his struggles with alcoholism and losing his company, etc., then you will probably like it a lot. The art work is kind of "box like" to me. The characters seem kind of square. The art work is not bad, it is just a little different to me. Unlike a lot of reviewers, I am not going to give you chapter and verse about the contents. I feel that is better left to the imagination and the actual reading of the book. There are cameo appearances by some formidable characters from the marvel universe. Apparently, I have been away from comicdom longer then I thought. One of the characters (cameo appearance) has been given a power that he did not have previously. It appears to be only for this particular incarnation. I believe he still is without this ability in the other books he appears in. Anyway, this is not a big super hero brawl type story nor does it take place on the fringes of the galaxy. It is not very scientific or technical eiher. It is a pretty simple story which takes place locally and has some very ordinary characters. Pretty entertaining if you are not looking to be overwhelmed.
