When World War II broke out she spent the school holidays at a farm in Shropshire along with her mother and her brothers, but lived in Aberdare, Wales, during term time. Bawden attended Somerville College, Oxford, where she gained a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Her novels include Carrie's War, Peppermint Pig, and The Witch's Daughter.

Nina Mary Mobey Bawden was born January 19, 1925 in London, England. Her first adult novel was published in 1953; her first juvenile book ten years later. When she was eight years old, she wrote an adventure story about a girl who ran away to sea. Educated at Somerville College, Oxford (. 1951), Bawden has written more than 30 books, a wide variety of fiction including mysteries, adventure, and romance for both children and adults. Bawden's work for children and adults has been acclaimed and honored.

Nina Bawden CBE FRSL JP (19 January 1925 – 22 August 2012) was an English novelist and children's writer. She was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1987 and the Lost Man Booker Prize in 2010. She is one of very few who have both served as a Booker judge and made a Booker shortlist as an author. She was a recipient of the Golden PEN Award. Bawden was born in 1925 and lived in Ilford, Essex, in "a rather nasty housing estate that mother despised".
