Story of Olvina learning what it's like to fly on a plane. Grace Lin did a terrific job introducing all the details of flying and making it understandable for little children. We started reading it before flying at 18months and it really helped give perspective about the whole travel process - we could say some of the lines from the book and make our daughter feel more comfortable. Ms. Lin has other great books too but this and "Olvina Swims" are my favorites.
Sorryyy
Olvina is a chicken. And being that she's a chicken she's never flown because everyone knows chickens can't fly. One day when Olvina gets an invitation to the Bird convention in Hawaii her friend tells her she should go... and fly with the help of a plane. Olivina thinks about going and then does a list of all the things she's not been able to do because she can't fly. Olivina decides it is time for her first flight. Olvina is worried but soon all her fears are gone and she makes a new friend a penguin who also does not fly. He tells her all about your ears popping and how chewing gum helps. Not long into the flight they become great friends and then at the bird convention.

Grace Lin has created a book to help calm and prepare your young child about what happens before, during and after a flight. The book is even current showing any people that bring you to the airport not being able to pass a certain point, having to show ID and your ticket before you go to your plane and the x-ray machine. I think Grace Lin has another hit on her hands! Thanks Grace Li for writing this book!

Our family has chickens and so I am always on the lookout for cute books starring chickens and this one was so darn cute! Olvina is flying to Hawaii for a bird convention and is very nervous since she has never flown before. My 3 year old twins will be taking their first flight (to Hawaii) in a few weeks so this was such fun to read to them. We even have a hen named Mabel (Olvina's aunts name) so it was really amusing to them. Great little book about taking your first flight on an airplane done with great illustrations and clear, simple text.

I loved Richard Scarry books when I was young, and this book reminds me of his. I love all of the animals characters and the fun details in the art. I think this is the perfect book for kids who are flying for the first time, and also just a fun storybook for anyone in general. The art is beautiful--wonderful patterns and bright colors.

What's a bird to do when she's afraid of flying? Poor Olvina, a chicken, really wants to attend the Tenth Annual Bird Convention (in Hawaii), but she's afraid of flying (in an airplane--chickens can't fly).
Fortunately for Olvina, she has a good friend in Will (a pig) who helps her get to the airport. The book does a great job of reviewing the elements of airline travel that can overwhelm young travelers: the busy airport, security checks, leaving friends behind at the gate, boarding the plane, and airplane noise at take off.
Lin's illustrations are charming. In Olvina's world, penguins, dogs, beavers, hippos, etc. are fellow travelers.
A great book--not just for those about to fly.

Our 5 year-old grandsons and 4 year-old granddaughter will be flying for the first time later this year. This book is an excellent introduction to the whole experience, from airports to airplane travel.
