My daughter loved it...

My grandson is in 1st grade and enjoys helping in the kitchen and likes soup. I thought this would be a perfect book for him since it is rated for grade 1 and up.

The first problem came in the illustrations, the eyes and noses, even the mouths of the characters, especially the mother and father really creeped him out. He looked at the pages holding his fingers over his eyes. It's difficult to explain the style, but lines are curved, even the counter and stove are on a downward curve. The noses are like the bottom part of an S and the eyes are large and tilt, with U shaped mouths that are also to one side of the face.

The words are large and simple on each page. The family is a team, the Dad stirs the soup, and the kids set the table. They add ingredients to the soup at the table - crackers and cheese. The father adds rice. My grandson said gross, he didn't even cook it? The brother adds ice.

The reading is simple. The story uses only 46 words, but somehow it lost my grandson as a fan of this book - he just pushed it away.

Fantastic book for a small child. Simple sentences and illustrations that follow the story line make it fun for my 4 year old to "read" or re-tell the story to us.
