Orange You Glad It's Halloween, Amber Brown? (A Is for Amber) Paperback. I think it's been interesting for my kid to see parents in a less than perfect relationship in a book - it hasn't been anxiety producing for her nor is it a particular emphasis, but is just presented as part of the imperfection of life. This is an age where I think she can begin to factor in a little more reality, can understand the nuances and depth of characters and it's nice to have a book that's easy to read, easy to understand and yet doesn't talk down to kids or pretend that the whole world is always full of fairy magic or shiny.

This book was assigned by my son's second-grade teacher, who works at a Catholic School. I'm going to go out on a ledge and say that she didn't read the book prior to assigning it. Anyway, neither did I prior to asking my 7-year-old to go to his room and read the book so that he would be prepared to write his book report. It's a book about Halloween, I thought. Amber Brown's biggest dilemma is probably which character to be for Halloween.

My son returns and I ask him, "What was Amber Brown's problem?" He says, "Her parents are fighting."
"NO! That's not the problem...that isn't the storyline. What dilemma was Amber Brown facing?"
My son replies, "She was afraid her parents would get divorced and ruin Halloween."
"Give me the book!" I read the book in disbelief. I'm done with Amber Brown and Paula Danziger.

ZERO STARS!!! This book is severely inappropriate for young children. The manner in when they discuss the parents relationship is very mature and has no relevance to the story. There is continuous name calling through to book. I WOULD NOT RECOMEND FOR ANY CHILD.

This book is totally inappropriate for the 1st - 3rd grade range that it's labeled for. Who wants to read a book about parents arguing and "mom didn't give dad a kiss goodbye" and "what if my parents get a divorce?". What does all that have to do with Halloween anyway? In addition to those things, there was name calling (booger, pumpkin pimple), a comment about dirty diapers and pumpkins drawn with pimples. This was our first book by this author and I don't plan to read any other Amber Brown books to our children.
