I have literally bought over fifty books and dvd's to help my kids learn Chinese and this workbook is the best of all of them. It is packed with vocabulary and it introduces new characters after teaching kids the radicals, or building blocks, of the Chinese characters. It also forces them to pay attention and learn the meaning as well as the written character. By the end of the book, the student should be capable of writing simple sentences in Chinese. My daughter is six years old and she loves learning the Chinese characters and writing them out. She also loves the different exercises that force her to comprehend everything that she has learned. My son is only four and this book is not quite for his level, but he is also learning characters along with his sister. This book is a godsend for me and makes it much easier to teach my kids Chinese. I cannot recommend this book enough for really teaching children Chinese. This is not some simple "hello", "goodbye" "thank you" type workbook. This is the real deal and it teaches kids complicated words and concepts that they need to push themselves to get a handle on. By the time my daughter finishes this workbook, I am sure that she will be able to have basic conversations with other kids in Chinese and she will also be capable of writing full sentences in Chinese. This workbook is a great base for learning Chinese.

Pros:
1. Lots of nice simple phrases and words that are appropriate for beginners.
2. Lots of pictures, easy for someone who's a native language speaker or has a teacher to follow along with

Cons:
1. This is really going to be meaningless unless you buy the textbook as well.
2. The activities range from like something a three-year-old might do (drawing a line from a number to a picture) to something more appropriate for a much older age-group (some of the words that need to be traced for example)

This is actually one of the better systems I've found for beginning Mandarin for kids... however, it's still not as good as similar second-language material I've found for other languages.

There are many gaps in this curriculum that needs explaining and a teacher. Do not expect to do this on your own. They say things and have things printed that are not covered. Many mysteries abound if you do not have a tutor.
Also, I disagree with the order and procedure. There are many words that need to be worked on, detailed before moving to another lesson.
Since this seems to have been written for kids, there should be more repetition and layering of information.

Disappointed as I ordered this for my grandkids, I was mainly going by other reviews. That's the lesson I learned... Patience and more research.

Good luck, you are going to need it.

I ordered this book along with the exercise book to teach Mandarin to a group of 7 - 9 years old students. after I received the book, I found out there isn't any CD's in the book. On the back of the book it said you can scan the QR code or visit their website to download the recording which I did, but I didn't find any recordings for the book that I used. I was native Chinese speaker I could get around without it, but for my students who are learning Chinese it is hard to use the book without the recordings. I would not recommend this series unless you work with private tutors who are native Chinese speakers.

I don't understand why there is no CD? The pages and excercise requires you to "listen" to a CD? How can I use the book according to its instruction?! It says to listen to the recordings!
JUST DO IT
A wonderful curriculum for teaching children the basics in Madarin Chinese. The workbook (sold seperately) is a wonderful companion to assist in their writing practice of forming the characters properly and includes the 'ping-ye' for pronunciation as well as the proper steps for the strokes in forming each character. This text includes a CD with wonderful voices pronouncing the language properly and with correct tonation to assist in the learning. Wonderful fun songs help in keeping it engaging for kids. Highly recommended by myself and by other native Mandarin Chinese speakers.
This is a workbook where you can trace radicals and characters, but it needs explanatory material. You need to know the meaning of what you are tracing. (Maybe I missed the text!) A lot of Chinese books show how to draw characters, but need to get more into how to use them (like in sentences). You learn best by practical application.
