Miss Liberty is sailing across the sea, she is a present from France, now the Amercans must raise enough money to give her a place to stand when she arrives. I have to read 40 books for my Children's Lit class and my daughter had this book in her room, so I thought what the heck. I haven't asked her yet what she thought of it, but I'm sure my son has read it. Being that he is the avid reader like his mom but my daughter you would have to pull teeth. lol! But this book was interesting because it gave information such as how the Statue of Liberty was brought to America and how Lily made her crowns was given at the end.

LILY AND MISS LIBERTY by Carla Stevens. This historical novel for children is set during the time when the French people presented the Statue of Liberty to America. The statue was ready, but there was no base on which to set it. The people of America had to supply the base for the statue. Even the schoolchildren helped and Lily did her part by making paper crowns and selling them. Every schoolchild in America has heard Emma Lazarus' poem and sees the State of Liberty as a beacon for incoming immigrants. But when Emma Lazarus wrote her poem, the Statue of Liberty, then being designed in France, didn't have anything to do with immigrants yet.

This book was required 2nd grade reading for my daughter's language arts class. It is a beautiful story of ingenuity, that also gives children a glimpse of life during the industrial period of American history and teaches about the origination of the Statue of Liberty. A great little story!

This is a cute and simple book that teaches about the Statue of Liberty and how it got to be ours! A perfectly fun and educational book! My daughter is 8 years old and loved it!
