What do you have there?

You can do something good

with it.

Oh, come with us and see

what you can do.

Although Margaret Hillert has written about 100 of these primers and this one is fairly popular with my children (boy and girl; 4 and 6 respectively), I wouldn't necessarily suggest it as a primer for children who are not familiar with the Pinocchio story.

The problem with the book is that unlike most of her other books (such as the Billy Goats Gruff) this one has some plot inconsistencies. For example, we see Pinocchio's father heading out in a boat to look for him, without any explanation for why that makes sense.. Water had never entered into the story previous to this, and on the previous page Pinocchio was on land running away from some school-avoiding bullies.

Three Stars. [C+]. A good basic primer for those in the kindergarten to first grader range. The artwork is appealing to children, and the story is probably familiar. If the story is not familiar you might find the storyline a little 'jumpy'. As a Read-aloud it is too simple.
