Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Ann Blades. Ann Blades's warm and witty retelling of the classic children's story centers on the happy home life of seven goat kids. When the Wolf tries to trick the kids, the youngest manages to overcome the calamities that befall his hapless siblings. Distinctive watercolor paintings by the author illustrate the story.

By (author) Jacob Grimm, By (author) Wilhelm Grimm, Illustrated by A. Mathieu. Those seeking a kinder, gentler Grimm will find this truly a traditional telling: The wolf greedily devours six of the kids, while Old Mother Goat courageously cuts open his full belly and substitutes stones for her children. With cozily cluttered interiors and nonthreatening, anthropomorphized animals, Watts's appealing, large paintings are agreeable foils for the scary tale. They are bright and crowded with amusing detail; even as the wolf waits by the door, bunnies and chickens flee. Children will know from the start that all's well that ends well.

When six of her seven kids are swallowed by a wicked wolf, Old Mother Goat devises a way to rescue them. Older readers may enjoy the more humorous illustrations in Eric Kimmel's Nanny Goat and the Seven Little Kids (Holiday, 1990), but this is an adequate addition.

Wolf and the Seven Li.This shows how Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs are both related stories that go back to this version, in which a wolf breaks into a house through trickery, eats six of the seven kids, and then falls asleep while the mother goat snips open his stomach and replaces her (still living) children with rocks, which kills the wolf.

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. Once upon a time there was an old goat. She had seven little kids, and loved them all, just as a mother loves her children. One day she wanted to go into the woods to get some food. So she called all seven to her and said, "Children dear, I am going into the woods. Be on your guard for the wolf. If he gets in, he will eat up all of you all, even your skin and hair. The little kids cried out, "First show us your paw so we may know that you are our dear little mother. So he put his paw inside the window, and when they saw that it was white, they believed that everything he said was true, and they opened the door.

Love the book, the story, the drawings. Typical Brother Grimm story, so there's always a message that could be applied to real life. My almost 3yr old fell in love with this book a while back, so I bought this additional copy (larger version) so that I won't have to worry if one breaks/is lost/etc. Fast shipping and the book was in almost pristine condition.

The Wolf and the Seven Kids is an excellent story to use for children when teaching them about the dangers of talking to strangers. The illustrations in this story are vibrant and grab the readers attention. Even though there is a graphic scene where the wolf eats six of the seven kids the mother saves her children by cutting them out of the wolf's stomach with a pair of scissors and then fills his stomach with rocks and sews him up. This shows the mother as the hero because she saves her children. This is an excellent story but I would be careful about reading it to younger children because they may get scared when the wolf eats the kids.
