As a child, Mother Nature only enjoyed warm weather and so it was up to Winter to change her mind by quietly wrapping her in a blanket of crystals while she slept so that she could experience and appreciate the beauty of snow when she awoke.

David Christiana is an American artist. He was born in Huntington, New York, has illustrated more than twenty picture books for children and authored four for international publishers such as Farrar, Straus & Giroux; Harcourt Brace; Little, Brown; Henry Holt; and Scholastic.

Young Mother Nature is warm enough to appreciate her first snowfall. Christiana (A Tooth Fairy's Tale, 1994, et. renders his fine paintings with sweeping lines and muted colors, but he seems to start with a story about why there are four seasons (instead of two) and leaves readers adrift in only three. While there are elements of fancy to which children will respond, this is a synthetic concoction.

This is a charming story book in every sense. The illustrations are colorful and beautifully executed, giving a magical feeling to the tale of young Mother Nature's first experience with young Winter. Young Winter can't understand why little Mother Nature won't accept him so he seeks the friendly advice of a huge polar bear named Aunt Artica.
You'll smile at the tactics Mother Nature uses to fend off this perplexing cold weather she faces. The text is lyrical and evocative such as when Summer tells the little girl it is time for her to be leaving and "she packed her trunk full of warm and green breezes." This is a fun one to read to children during the November drearies, perhaps over fresh baked gingerbread.

As others have said, the illustrations are amazing. The story is very poetic and it is an easy read that my daughter loves. She wants to read this over and over. She's two and a half and loves reading, but she picks certain books as favorites and this is definitely one of them. It's not very long and I feel that even though she may not understand the story yet, the pictures capture her attention and keep her very enthralled. I would highly recommend this book!

This modern tale of the first Fall and the first Winter/snow reads like an ages-old folk tale than a recently written story. Herein lies it's charm.
