One night during the Perseid meteor shower, Arianne thinks she sees a shooting star land in the fields surrounding her family's horse farm. About a year later, one of their horses gives birth to a baby centaur. At a time when so many novels are set in other worlds, Jane Yolen imagines what it would be like if a creature from another world came to ours in this thoughtfully written, imaginative novel, Centaur Rising. A Christy Ottaviano Book. Fantasy, Young Adult.

Snow in Summer, Jane Yolen. p. cm. Summary: Recasts the tale of Snow White, setting it in West. Virginia in the 1940s with a stepmother who is a snake-handler. Ahead of us is a flatbed cart, drawn by four big black horses with crow feathers twisted in their manes. Barrel-chested and heavy-legged, they’re being led along the track by Preacher Watson, his tall black hat spotted by the snow. We’re a sorry congregation, walking in the horses’ hoof-prints or the ruts made by the wheels of the cart. All the way up to the old cemetery where all us Mo.

This book has a wonderful soothing rhythm. It FEELS like a bedtime story. This book is out of print, but there of often reasonably priced used copies, and I think they are worth it. My children love this book.

This book is out of print but I loved using someone else's copy for the class I teach. Now I have my own and love it!

Nocturne is a quiet night time lullaby that introduces children to all of the creatures that wander about in the velvet dark of night. The text is complimented quite nicely by the calming, ethereal illustrations.

My four-year old daughter really enjoyed looking at the pictures of the nocturnal animals and asking me questions about them.

The only thing that I would say is negative about the book, is the cost. I went to the library for my copy. $62.00 sounds pretty high for a copy. Maybe it's a typo.

I've always loved Jane Yolen's works, and recently started reading her children's books to my young children. But this book was breathtaking. The imagery and descriptions are so rich. I checked it out of the library, but now I'm on the hunt for a copy for my own bookshelf. I noticed she has written a book of poetry for children, and I can't wait to check that out of my library next!
