For a change, this author attempts to give his readers a sampling of ghosts from around the world, although he does end up in Great Britain, which seems to have a larger concentration of supernatural beings per square foot than any other nation on Earth. His style is very tongue-in-cheek, head-under-arm. Some of my favorite passages concern Indian ghosts called 'Bhuts:'

"Bhuts usually try to scare anyone they can, bhut--sorry--but, given the choice, prefer women, children, and, for some strange reason, newlyweds."

By the way, the correct translation of 'bhut' is 'has-been'--a rather appropriate term for 'ghost.'

Grownups may soon tire of Farman's breezy commentary, but kids should love this book. Some of the stories are even genuinely spooky, e.g. "The Bad Teacher Alert" and "The Hairy Hands."

Farman begins with a short introduction on 'How to be a Ghost,' then offers up his own definition (borrowing from Samuel Johnson at one point) of what a ghost might be:

"...the part that makes us 'us' and different from everyone else (apart from big noses and big ears), hangs around for a while refusing to stay in his or her coffin."

This book isn't devoted exclusively to ghosts; the reader is also treated to various mummy curses, invisible hair-cutting demons, shape-changing foxes, zombies, driverless buses, a tree-of-death, a hand-of-glory, and a guitar that seemed to play itself.

The numerous cartoons in "The Short and Bloody History of Ghosts" are very much attuned to the author's lighthearted style.

This is a great informative book of information about ghosts, poltergeists, vampires and sightings of them all. Not only does the reader learn about the differences between ghosts and poltergeists and other interesting facts but some great British one liner humour is threaded throughout this book as well. The writing is clean and simple enough that kids as well as adults will enjoy reading this masterpiece from cover to cover. The illustrations also by John Farman are also sensational and amusing. I'll definitely be checking out his other work as well. Definitely buy this, and watch out for the ghost chicken!
