Christian Counter Culture book. The book covers Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5-7, which is probably the best known of His discourses. It contains the fundamentals of the Christian faith and what the church should look like in deed as well as thought. As Stott himself says, It is the nearest thing to a manifesto that he ever uttered, for it is his own description of what he wanted hi I appreciate John Stott’s sincerity, insight, and writing style, so I expected to learn a lot with this book.

Matthew 5-7English Standard Version (ESV). The Sermon on the Mount. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. The Beatitudes. 2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. For many Christian readers, this may take the guesswork out of the Sermon on the Mount, the beatitudes, Christian living, the kingdom and genuine salvation. This just may provide the answers to some heavy questions that we encounter in the Bible. And some points that Stott brings up may not be readily received because they are very tough to receive. Guaranteed, once you start reading you will find it hard to put down.

My church used John Stott's book for our 6-weeks Bible study of the Sermon on the Mount. I found this book a difficult read. Basically, it was boring and uninteresting. I was generous in giving it 3 stars. No one in our group had anything positive about the book, other than the fact that we learned a little more about Jesus's sermon.

I feel like 3 stars is often used for critical reviews, but overall I liked it. A good explanation of the Sermon and I highlighted a number of Stott's passages. I also felt parts of it were dry and overly wordy. The end of the book has an extensive guide on using the book for group study. My fault, but since I was reading the Kindle edition I didn't see it until I was finished, I wish that section would have been mentioned in the introduction.

Excelent commentary! John Stott does a masterful job explaining the text, connecting the pieces the whole, and relating Scripture to real life. Most importantly, it touches the heart and increases your love for Christ! I highly recommend this book!

This makes an excellent Bible study. There are references to Old Testament law that help students understand Jesus' words. The author clearly states when Jesus uses harsh words, such as plucking out an offending eye, as dramatic example of the severity of sin, but not to be taken literally. LifeGuide has an accompany study guide leaders can use for study questions.

Stott does an amazing job unpacking Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, help us understand the true meaning and what it doesn't mean, especially those heavily debated scriptures that are often taken out of context.

I am preaching through the beatitudes right now, and next year, I plan on preaching through the rest of the Sermon on the Mount. I already had all the heavy duty technical books on this section of the Bible. So I really needed a book where the writer explained the text in a way that people could understand it.

Stott's book fills that void. He masterfully explains and applies the text to life, and he always gives you something to chew on in digestible form. In addition to owning one or two technical commentaries on Matthew, I recommend picking up this little book if you are preaching or studying Matthew 5-7.
