This book is great for women who have experienced the message that women are lesser than men, who have learned an unhealthy definition of submission to man, and need to know that they too are equally valued in God's sight. After all, who was the first person to share the good news of the resurrection? It was a woman. And God had her share it with men!

I also recommend this book to those who minister to these women, whether or not they themselves have experienced this type of spiritual abuse. It will help the latter understand women who have been subjected to this way of thinking and taught that it is "biblical." For that matter, I recommend this book to anyone who has a spiritual relationship with women, particularly men who counsel women. It might help them see ways they have absorbed this viewpoint and help them treat these women in a truly biblical way.

I had only read the first two chapters when I purchased another copy for a friend who ministers to women. I don't know if I have EVER done that. Although, I might not have this time either if she was nearby so that I could loan the book to her.

People caught up in the patriarchy movement would probably not like this book. In fact, they might even deny that some of these teachings are abusive. On the other side, the book is not a feminist reaction.

The chapters are written by varying authors and address slightly different aspects. In this kind of book, if you don't like the writing style of one, you will probably find others that are more to your taste. Actually, I have yet to finish the book. I'm about 3/4 through. However, even if the rest of the book falls flat, I think it is worth the purchase. I expect the rest of the book is just as good as what I have read so far.

The phrases you read in this book about men's "entitlements" are statements we have all heard far too many times. They've been used for centuries to keep women subservient, submissive, and "sub"-everything, basically. This book shows where the basis for these attitudes comes from, and it also explains how these attitudes can be changed.

I teach at the college level on The Biblical Role of Men and Women. I found this book to be well written, and life changing to the people in my class. Highly recommended to all wanting to know how in the world that Jesus---The Prince of Peace---ever allowed his followers to become abused or abusers! HE DIDN'T! Violence is NEVER allowed! Get a copy of it, and the other books that speak against the misuse of Headship in relationships.

It may be a little dated with the information for the current age, but it is relevant still largely relevant in many areas. Especially for those women in the church who experienced the last century's silence and subtle censorship of women who were abused or divorced because of an abusive spouse. I highly recommend it for pastors or those who counsel women who are abused so you don't step in the traditional thoughts and interpretations about scripture. Also so that you can understand the trauma of abused women.
