Franciscan Prayer by Ilia Delio . I am very grateful that Ilia Delio who I imagine to be a terrific teacher as well as scholar spends her "free" time writing books such as this. Her understanding and expression of the "Mystery" of the Trinity is as good as it gets! " Incarnation," says Delio, "is about God's involved goodness in creation" and as she says in the book's introduction, " The humility of God is really about God's relationship to the world and God's fidelity to the world, even when everything in the world seems to fail.

Quotes Quotable Quote. Rather, we pray to disclose the image of God in which we are created, the God within us, that is, the one in whom we are created and in whom lies the seed of our identity. The journey of prayer for Franciscans is the discovery of God at the center of our lives. We pray not to acquire a relationship with God as if acquiring something that did not previously exist. We pray so as to discover what we already have- the incomparable treasure hidden in the field of the world and of the human heart.

Masterfully written and intensely enlightening, Franciscan Prayer could very well be considered the essential handbook for all those seeking to pray and live the Franciscan way. With exquisite execution, Franciscan theologian Ilia Delio clearly outlines what it means to pray as a Franciscan. Through her experience as a discalced Carmelite nun and then her transformation into Franciscan scholar, Sister Delio brings to light the “contemplative,” “cosmic” and “evangelizing” aspects of Franciscan prayer. Everyone, says Delio, seems to know about Francis’ life, his miracles, his devotion to evangelization and his dedication to living a simple and humble life, yet few know about his prayer life, which seemed, over the centuries, to get lost in the paper shuffle between theologians, followers and historical biographers. It is through Clare of Assisi, Delio asserts, that we have insights into the Franciscan path of prayer. “[Clare] provides the ‘road-map’ of prayer for evangelical life…she was able to do this because she lived under monastic rule while ardently desiring evangelical life.” Through Clare’s letters and actions, we find the rudiments of Franciscan prayer: “Gaze—Consider—Contemplate—Imitate.” Delio also uses the insights of Saint Bonaventure as well as Saint Francis to fully show the meaning and purpose of prayer in the Franciscan tradition.

Dr. Delio, a Franciscan of the First Order, and also a well-respected writer in Christology, is on the circuit a great deal giving her insights into mystical Chritianity. This book, one of ten or eleven she has authored, is a very practical, yet sensitive aproach to the difficult process of contemplative prayer. Practical "how-to's" given with compassion for those who have difficulty descending to a place within where there is a peace and a fellowhip with what she calls the eternal spirit of the universe. Conversationally written, it's worth a go, especially for those who like to say, "Well, I'm not religious, but I am spiritual." Stand by. This is a test.

A must read for anyone on the Franciscan journey. It is full of Franciscan theology, Bonaventure, Francis and Clare, their spirituality and the transformation and conversion we experience when we pray and experience God as a Franciscan.

The chapter titles are: Divine-Human Relationship, Desire, Prayer and the Spiritual Journey, Learning to Gaze - Poverty and Prayer, Friendship with Christ, The Heart Turned Toward God, Contemplation - Seeing and Loving, Imitation - Becoming What We Love and The Way to Peace.

Sister Delio explains Clare's method of contemplative prayer: gaze, consider, contemplate and imitate. "Imitation of Christ is the fruit of prayer - not the literal mimicking of Christ, rather it means becoming the image of the beloved through transformation." She draws the comparison to a mother's love that like Mary gives birth to Christ.

Franciscan prayer is about gospel living. We don't have to leave the world to find God; rather one finds God in the details of the world. "We are not simply to pray - we are to become prayer - living flames of love that ignite the world." To share in the love of the Word made flesh is relational and bring us out into the world to embrace not only our brothers and sisters, but also our enemy so that we may share in the joy of the triune God.

Seven of us were looking for a book to use on a retreat about St. Francis. The retreat design is read a chapter the day before and spend morning in meeting reflecting on the material. Delio provides reflection questions at the end of each chapter which provoked a lot of soul searching and valuable sharing. It's more about Franciscan spirituality than about St. Francis' life.
