Pastoral dialogue involves an integrated mindful personal presence and interested .

Pastoral dialogue involves an integrated mindful personal presence and interested unknowing that engages the other with the same vulnerability and alertness that one brings to God in prayer. I do not know the curriculum of pastoral counseling programs, but I suspect this would be an asset to any such program. Discovery of When Hearts Become Flame by Dr. Stephen Muse marked the opening of a new and pivotal chapter in my life on many levels.

When Hearts Become Flame: An Eastern Orthodox Approach to the Dia-Logos of Pastoral Counseling. Muse has a lot more training and experience in pastoral counseling then I have. The book is an unusual mix of psychotherapy, modern Orthodox ascetical monasticism, and in the end the politics of justice. May 29, 2012 Franklin Tait rated it it was amazing.

When hearts become flame. Stephen Muse has written an important book on pastoral counseling from the perspective of Eastern Orthodox theology. An Eastern Orthodox Approach to the διά-Λογος of Pastoral Counseling. Paperback (January 2011). ISBN: 978-1-933275-48-2.

This book is an absolute must-read for Christian pastoral counselors and Christian psychotherapists of all denominations. While writing from an Eastern Orthodox perspective, the Rev. Dn. Muse penetrates deep truths relevant for any religiously informed the counseling and psychotherapeutic encounter. In his exploration of the "Trialogue," a transcendent view of the counselor, client, and the Other, the humble view that all are transformed by the process and its many manifestations are richly explored. The Presence of the Holy Other may be a surprise but welcomed and helpful when attended to. Rather than integrating psychological approaches with theology, the Rev. Dn. Muse wisely keeps them in dialogue, preventing them from being watered down, which only enhances each perspective them further. For example, his point that "God and science only become antagonists when they are seen to be on the same level as competing paradigms, which is an epistemological error," sets the tone for a rich dialogue which may be uniquely Orthodox in origin, but a perspective that seems to enrich all Christian perspectives on therapy and counseling. His explorations of trauma, the spiritual in therapy, human justice, supervision, the spiritual in the therapeutic encounter, clergy in crisis, and the transformative value of suffering with fellow humans are unique and enriching explorations that will challenge the reader to deeper introspection and growth. I do not know the curriculum of pastoral counseling programs, but I suspect this would be an asset to any such program. Thank you, Rev. Dn Muse, for stimulating us with this heartfelt, intelligent and deeply probing work.

Discovery of When Hearts Become Flame by Dr. Stephen Muse marked the opening of a new and pivotal chapter in my life on many levels. My professional development as an individual, marriage, and family therapist was infused with new "fire" as Dr. Muse provided spiritual direction, assisting me to reflect on the many transformational moments in my counseling ministry over the years, and providing direction in specific therapeutic challenges of the present. I now realize that I experience "Emmaus Walk" miracles nearly daily ~ and am newly able to identify, name, receive, and stand in awe of them as mutually transformational ~ counselor and counselee alike.

Even more stunning to me, however, is the impact of an ongoing conversation with Dr. Muse, much of it based on When Hearts Become Flame. As a lifelong Protestant/Lutheran Christ-follower (not yet Orthodox, but moving in that direction) I'm grappling with a new appreciation of the historic faith, especially as it undergirds and unifies all of life. Professional, personal, spiritual, physical, relational, emotional, and intellectual newness emerges and unifies as the Spirit breathes life. Dr. Muse's many gifts of insight, encouragement, and Spirit-breathed wisdom ~ spiced with a gentle sense of humor ~ have provided rich mentoring, long prayed-for.

"We will leave behind willfulness and reductionism, and enter into that vast ocean of Divine Eros that bids us come walk on water." Such are the beckoning, resonating gifts of Dr. Stephen Muse to us, his fellow Pilgrims.

This book is irreplaceable for integrating counseling theory with Orthodox spirituality. Its primary audience is counselors treating the pastoral community, but I've found an enormous amount of insight even for myself as a layperson. It's both accessible and challenging, a rare combination for such a thorough and scholarly work. I'll be referring back to this for years.
Exellent
A wonderful presentation about how psychological and relationship therapy intersects with spiritual counseling. The emphasis is on an authentic triadic encounter between pastoral counselor, the person seeking counseling and the Spirit of God in the encounter, as well as the dynamics of the encounter. There are many references to the wisdom literature of the Church (and desert) Fathers. It is written in a warm and personal style. It distinguishes pastoral counseling from spiritual direction

Dr. Muse's writing style is circuitous and often dense. Some run on sentences can approach paragraph length. The technical jargon and Eastern Christian theological terminology, as well as references to Eastern Christian saints and "elders", could be an obstacle for some readers who are not familiar with Eastern Christianity. Some chapters will be very technical for readers without some academic psychology background. Nevertheless, as an Anglican priest, professional chaplain and a marriage relationship therapist, I found parts of the book very helpful and insightful in a theoretical way. My hunch is that most pastoral counselors, chaplains, and clergy would find some chapters in the book both challenging and stimulating. I would relish the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Muse and hear the story of his spiritual journey. In short, if you can dig through the coal one is apt to find a few nuggets of gold. I wish Dr. Muse had included a few more practical case studies.
This was a recommendation from my priest. I am thankful that I followed through and purchased a copy for myself. Now I plan on getting a few for presents.
