John-Julian, OJN, from the Middle English of Julian of Norwich. desert fathers or even the Cistercians who could not bare to set up one of their monasteries within hearing of the bells of another monastery. Julian's visions as spiritual literature don't seem to have been particularly well known in the middle ages. It survives in one manuscript of a short version and three manuscripts of a long version, the oldest of which dates from the fifteenth century. By contrast here Christ and the Devil come to Julian while she is in bed. It could hardly be more homely.

Revelations of Divine Love is a medieval book of Christian mystical devotions. It was written by an anchoress called Dame Julian, now known as Julian of Norwich, about whom almost nothing is known. Julian, who lived all her life in the English city of Norwich, wrote about the sixteen mystical visions or "shewings" she received in 1373, when she was thirty

There is a 'Short Text', which appears to have been written down soon after Julian recovered from the illness that nearly killed her in 1373. In it, Julian describes the terrifying recent events of her deathbed and the spiritual comfort she received during her darkest hour. The version which you can see here – the so-called ‘Long Text’ – was composed decades after the Short Text
