Kristy O'Neal gave up her dream job as a park ranger at Shiloh National Military Park to get married and move away. When she's left at the altar, she returns to the park to find her old position has already been filled. She accepts a seasonal position even though it is a step back, career-wise. Working alongside Ace Kennedy (the man who has her old job) is almost more than Kristy can handle. Throw in a matchmaking mother and friends who think she should put herself back in the dating game, and Kristy is nearly at her wits' end. She sees the past as a battlefield of failed relationships and isn't sure she's ready to risk her heart again. For Ace Kennedy, history offers proof that true love exists. With stories from the park's rich history in his arsenal, he begins the battle to win Kristy's heart. But when Kristy learns he's keeping secrets from her, her skepticism of love seems justified. Can she risk her heart on the battlefield of love one more time or will Ace lose Kristy forever?

"Love is a Battlefield" is a Christian romance. The heroine quit her job, was left at the altar, and will have to accept a demotion to a seasonal ranger if she wants to keep working at the park she loves. Rather than resent the people who deserve it, she decides to resent the poor fellow who was hired to take her position. He's very nice and understanding, but he accidentally keeps doing things that tick her off. She knows she's being immature to take her issues out on him. Some forced time together (on a stake-out to catch a vandal) makes her reconsider her attitude toward him.

The heroine had a number of issues that she needed to work through (why she agreed to marry a guy she didn't love, her strained relationship with her sister, etc.), and the story was as much about that as the romance. But we do get many scenes involving the hero and heroine working together, getting to know each other, and falling in love. The underlying theme was forgiving past hurts.

The hero and heroine were both Christians, so they went to church and prayed. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable romance.

Fresh off a solo honeymoon, Kristy returns to work soured on love, and on Ace, who has her old job; but vandalism at work has them spending time together, and things start to change.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 3.5 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. I'm not convinced that Brad's death/mystery letters was actually necessary in this story. It's clearly setting up for a trilogy (in fact, when we first met her 2 friends and one was married, my immediate thought was, "poor Brad, something's going to happen to him"), but that section felt too far removed from the rest of the story, and I don't think Kristy needed another reason to push Ace away. Setting is believable, but the mentions of such a variety of specific places made me wish for a map. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. They have an end-of-summer party several weeks before the end of summer?

Characters: 4 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Kristy was going through a lot, and I was glad she took the time to sort out her past relationships with family and fiance before fully committing to a new romance. Ace grieved Caroline but came to see he didn't love her as more than a friend. On the other hand, keeping his writing a secret to the bitter end felt a bit bizarre to me. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. I liked how aware of Kristy Ace was, and how Kristy saw the differences in her relationships with Robert and Ace.

Mechanics and Writing: 3 -- Frequent typos, mainly a very serious problem with capitalization, and a few punctuation and word errors. Good use of alternating POV (Kristy and Ace). Generally skillful writing.

Redeeming Value: 4 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Ace and Kristy both learn how different real love is from the things they had thought were love before. Kristy also learns to extend grace and forgiveness to people who have wronged her, even if they don't actually apologize or repent: her sister, her father, and her ex-fiance. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, though there is a bit of a scuffle with the vandal and Kristy suspects both Brad and Ace of cheating at various points.

Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

I loved reading Love is a Battlefield (A Walk in the Park Book 1), all about Kristy O'Neal a 28 year old Park Ranger at the Shiloh National Military Park in Tennessee. She's worked at the park since she was a young girl, and has worked her way all the way to a full time ranger, until recently when she handed in her resignation because she was getting married and moving to Jackson. However things changed when the groom didn't show up the day of the wedding, and Kristy had to send everybody home, and she went on the honeymoon cruise herself. Things have turned from bad to worse, when she came back from the cruise to discover her old job has been filled, and she has been demoted to a seasonal ranger. Which means she has a job from Memorial Day thru Labor Day her pay is cut and she has to find a permanent position after the summer a away from her beloved Park! Not only is she reeling from her jilted marriage, but she kind of likes the new ranger Ace Kennedy the guy who took her job, even though it isn't his fault she never stopped her resignation, it was just one more thing that fell to the wayside, when she was jilted. Kristy is feeling sorry for her self, but has to come to terms with her life, if she's ever to move forward. The author wrote a very interesting story, and the characters make the story come to life! Read this story, and find out all about Kristy & her amazing job as a park ranger at one of the Civil War parks in the USA and her relationships with the other park employees. I was unable to put this book down, give it a try it won't disappoint. Looking forward to reading the other two books in the series!

I totally enjoyed this book. Kristy is left at the alter and now has no trust in men and/or love. She had resigned her position as a Shiloh National park ranger in anticipation of moving after her wedding. Ace has been hired to take her position so she is offered a summer job at the park. She takes the summer job with no clue as to what she will do when it ends on Labor Day. She does not want to leave the area where she grew up but knows she might have to in order to find another job. There is a lot going on in the story besides Kristy trying to figure out her personal life and reconcile her relationship with God. Will she be able to put all the pieces together and find true love? This book kept me engaged from page one through the ending.

There are capitalization errors that are distracting for me. At the present time, I am 30% into the book and the story is quite good. I have finished the book and although the capitalization errors continued, the story was good enough to keep me reading. I loved the setting of this book and all of its characters.
