I am not sure why I loved this book, but I keep rereading it. The plot is predictable yet outrageous at times (feuding families, marriage at gunpoint, a secret that CANNOT be shared, etc.), but Opal is endearing and her reactions to the outrageous situations in the book are realistic. It picks up on events at the end of the last book (where Adam saved Opal from the fire). It is also chock-full of fantastically awkward situations. I do wish that it hadn't spent so much time sharing his mother's point of view.

Not necessarily what I was expecting in a "Prairie" book. An ongoing feud for the characters, very primitive mind sets for some, not so much for others. I kept expecting "more" of some of the characters, was not necessarily disappointed, just kept waiting for it. Interesting concept, again primitive; I enjoyed the storyline, I enjoyed Opal, her friend Midge & I enjoyed Adam. I did not enjoy Adam's brother, Larry. I guess a creep today is no different than the creeps in prairie times, they are all creeps, & even at that, their mothers love them.

Ms Hake wrote it so you could "feel" it. Good job. Enjoy your read.

While I didn't care for the premise that the main characters began their marriage due to a lie on the part of one of them, and this lie was not confessed to the other until near the end of the book, I did somewhat sympathize with her reasons and the soul-searching that she accomplished throughout the course of the story. The author managed to come up with plausible reasons for everyone's words and actions, even the bad guy's. The one loose end had to do with the mother-in-law; I would have liked to see some evidence of repentance and change on her part, as there was in several other characters.

A family feud, two desperate peacekeepers, a hasty marriage beset by efforts to destroy it, and miscommunications to defeat it, make for a fascinating and riveting read. I found the characters ALL to be well-drawn, with an understanding of the nature of jealousy, thwarted lust, pride, self-sacrifice and love giving a wonderful depth to the story. The villain of the piece was particularly well defined, and her rejection of redemption, even though she was briefly able to rise above her self-inflicted perniciousness, especially poignant. Read it; enjoy for yourself.

I liked the characters in this story, and I believe the writing to be excellent choice for persons of all ages especially the younger readers. I only gave 3 stars because it is very predictable and often quite wordy. I think this story could have been told in about half the pages. But I do love the happy ending.

Well written & clean. - I never really liked the fact that some families held such old grievances - BUT this book told of 2 families who thought they were better than the other family, etc. Hake created a nice clean romance(s) that came out of this.
(I'm guessing there is a another book to complete this story because I really want to see the horrible mother-in-law quit being so selfish.)

The story was very compelling and had many twists and turns in it to keep the reader involved enough to keep reading it to find out what happened next.
Really great book! I love all Kelly Eileen Hake books and this one doesn't disappoint. At times I was really wanting to shake Opal and tell her to just spit out the truth! But, the story was written so well that I understood why she kept silent. I also felt like I personally got to know the characters, and I always love that!

I finally turned the last page around 3AM. A testament to how good of a book it was! Pick it up, you won't regret it!
