Green Lantern Vol. 1: Fearsome is the first volume in a new continuity. The story here continues in Green Lantern Corps Vol. 2: Alpha War. However, the Green Lantern Corps series is almost entirely unaffected by this continuity shift. Instead, Green Lantern Corps Vol. 1: Fearsome directly follows the events from Green Lantern: War of the Green Lanterns. This volume also references other comic books, detailed below: The change in Hal Jordan’s status as a Green Lantern is mentioned.

The Corps soon find one of their own held by the ruthless Keepers and must figure out a way to save their comrade and defeat the Keepers without the Green Lantern's most powerful weapon, their power rings.

This volume collects Green Lantern Corps #1-7 of the DC New 52.

The Green Lantern Corps pick remarkable sentient beings throughout the galaxy. They receive a green ring that is fueled by the emotion of willpower (not really sure if will is an emotion but it is worth overlooking to just get immersed in this amazing universe) 3600 sectors two per sector so 7200 lanterns always serving, when one dies another gets the ring.

Earth's sector's representatives, (yeah there are more than two representing earth but it is a long story) main representatives, are Guy Gardner and John Stewart. They have a lot of baggage and grudges towards their bosses, the "self appointed" Guardians of the Universe. Guy and John soldier on out of duty to the corps, their brothers and sisters in will, and the innocent lives across the universe. Things heat up as Green Lanterns are being executed and worlds are being drained of natural resources leaving organic life dead. Guy, John, and a few other Corps members investigate to find The Keepers a band of fanatics with the ability to harvest willpower of their own and thirst for vengeance against the Green Lantern Corps.

Some background. Not necessary to the review: Peter J. Tomasi is back on writing Green Lantern Corps and I for one could not be happier! I got into the Green Lantern mythos a few years ago via Geoff Johns and Green Lantern: Rebirth. Great starting point. A new Green Lantern series began and so did a resonance for this niche of the DC universe. Green Lantern Corps followed first written primarily by Dave Gibbons (artist co-plotter of The Watchman fame) with a few guest writers. But, as soon as The Sinestro Corps Wars hit long time editor Peter J. Tomasi was given the book and it found a steady balance and great consistent storytelling. Tomasi briefly moved to a Guy Gardner centered Lantern series: Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors Vol. 1 (Green Lantern Graphic Novels). This led in the Green Lantern: War of the Green Lanterns (Green Lantern (Graphic Novels)) epic with it's followup War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath. The DC reboot happened and Tomasi is back on Green Lantern Corps and also writing an amazing Batman and Robin series. Tomasi should be considered among one of DC top writers alongside Johns, Snyder, and Lemire.

This collection is great and picks up where the Green Lantern universe is from the old DCU while not being intimidating to new readers. The first chapter/issue gives a great job of giving a day in the life of Gardner and Stewart (great character moments that long time fans of the characters will appreciate), giving info on what is necessary to know about the corps, and setting up the villains for this arc in horrific fashion.

Tomasi really has the hot headed Gardner and former marine pragmatic thinker Stewart nailed down perfectly. The rest of the cast is somewhat brushed by but the basics are given to make them unique and not too part of the background. Isamot Kol is the stand out, the sassy intense space raptor! The story is solid. It builds and builds creating so much tension along way with a stunning conclusion. Chapter/issue seven, the last of the book, is more of an epilogue to the madness that just ensued giving a great character moment for John Stewart and a much needed breather and reflection that rarely happens in comics. At its core this arc delivers what you would want from this series: an awesome space soap opera with crazy space battles.

The problems I had with this story/series are minor yet worth a mention. First, I did not appreciate that on the cover, Doug Manke's awesome cover, Araisa and Sornik Natu (great characters in the old DCU) are shown but are nowhere to be found in the story. Sad to see two great characters cut out like that and female characters at that. Another tiny gripe, is the introduction of a DCU powerhouse just thrown in for a dues ex machina moment. He randomly shows up right when the plot comes to a halt to further things along and give exposition on the antagonists. A lazy cop out BUT it was cool to see him pop up and see how much he has changed since the reboot and raise a few good questions/concerns about the Green Lantern Corps. Lazy writing, but forgivable to see a favorite character do his thing.

The art is spot on. Fernando Pasarin does an excellent job illustrating . He can do facial closeups showing intense expressions and then switch to full page/two page spreads of wild space fights both with incredible detail. His alien worlds are lush and creative. Fill in artists Geraldo Borges and Claude ST. Aubin fill in without missing a beat.

Be sure to check out the sister titles: Green Lantern Vol. 1: Sinestro (The New 52) (main title, Johns continuing to work his magic),Red Lanterns Vol. 1: Blood and Rage (The New 52) (the Red Lantern Corps fueled by the emotion rage probably the weakest of the lantern titles by still a very good read), and Green Lantern - New Guardians (Green Lantern and earthman, Kyle Rayner, works with members of the other corps cannot wait for it's release in about a month!).

So thrilled to have more Green Lantern Corps written by Tomasi with great art. I cannot wait for more. Truly "In Brightest Day"!

I love Green Lantern Corps. I love Peter Tomasi as a writer. I'm still out on this DCU relaunch. Some titles have been great since the relaunch (Batman & Robin, Green Lantern) but this one seems a little middle of the road. The Corps series before the relaunch was one of my favourites. I felt like this volume left a little to be needed.

John Stewart and Guy Gardner are the focus here. They were not partners in the previous series and the working dynamic between the two seems a little thin (it just doesn't compare to the relationship we saw develop between Gardner and Rayner as partners). Also, the main villains here seem to be an anti-corps that sucks the will of the Green Lanterns, thus draining their power. A little too easy I think.

I feel like DC execs had too much say in what they wanted to see in this series without letting the author really do his own thing.

Peter J Tomasi makes it clear why he was picked as the writer for this series. This book is one of my favorite green lantern comic books. I have most of Geoff Johns run pre 52 so that's saying a lot.

I have to say that I am enjoying these Lantern comics. This story was solid and it was overall a very well written book. I loved this book and cant wait to read the next one.

Got these books for a very reluctant reader who loved them and kept begging for more. Can't beat that.
Kupidon
Good story. the illustrations are amazing worth buying.

A really good start for me you see how John and Guy Interact. Also they are for a normal life for how being a green lantern interact with that.
If you like Green Lantern, than this book is a must have. GLC is real cool, lots of superhero's and lots of supervillians. Plus, instead of one GL or two, this GN has almost the whole core in each book. If your a big GL fan, BUY THIS BOOK.
