Dark Entries had many strengths: Rankin's characterization of the seen-it-all rebel Constantine, the sendup of asinine reality TV shows, the twists in the plot, the back stories of the secondary characters, and the minimalist but effective art style of Werther Dell'edera.

Dark Entries is a 2009 original graphic novel written by Ian Rankin. The author's earliest work in the comic field, it was one of two books to launch Vertigo's new sub-imprintVertigo Crime, along with Brian Azzarello's Filthy Rich. Italian artist Werther Dell'Edera created the interior art and Lee Bermejo painted the cover for the book. The story involves DC Comics character John Constantine, best known from the Vertigo series Hellblazer.

Dark Entries, Constantine is told by the mysterious and suitably slick TV producer standing in his frontroom, is a show with a haunted-house scenario. The contestants represent the usual combination of salacious hotties, nervous geeks, mysterious foreigners and tattooed troublemakers. The problem is that Rankin cannot decide if he truly wants to scare us or just remain in the realm of light satire, testing out a brand of dark comedy that never dims to any shade of black.

Surprisingly devoid of any crime, Ian Rankin’s Dark Entries was strangely printed under the now defunct Vertigo Crime Imprint. With our hero in the picture the only thing left to establish is the setting.

Ian Rankin isn’t the first author to turn his hand to comics, with names as diverse as Jodi Picoult and Michael . Dark Entries is a modern twist on the haunted house scenario, set in the world of reality TV, with producers calling on the talents of Constantine after some spooky incidents.

Ian Rankin isn’t the first author to turn his hand to comics, with names as diverse as Jodi Picoult and Michael Chabon all having had a go. In fact he isn’t even the first Scottish crime writer to script a John Constantine story, with Denise Mina having written 12 issues of Hellblazer in 2006. But with the news that Big Brother is being axed, it already feels dated, though Werther Dell’edera’s scratchy black and white art captures the mood.

A must for Hellblazer fans. This is not the best and if I was a little less fan and a little more critic I'd be tempted to give it four stars. BUT... I'm not. Rankin, like every other Hellblazer author from Delano to Azzarello channels Constantine perfectly. The story is a nice bit of mystery which Constantine sorts out for you by midway, leaving the second half a s*** show of 'how do I get myself out of this flamming hot pickle.' Definitely recommend for fans or for those looking for a good supernatural thriller.

This was the first of the Vertigo Crime graphic novels that I read, and like the subsequent books in the series, it excells on every level.

Ian Rankin shows a real comprehension of what makes John Constantine(of the Hellblazer comics) tick, and what makes for an engrossing Constantine story. His writing is spot on for the character. His devil-may-care attitude, smirky and witty sense of humor, and genius deductive skills are all on display here. His knowledge of the supernatural world comes through exactly as you'd expect from a Constantine tale. He knows better than anyone how to bedevil the devil, and this book makes you root for him all the way through. The other characters are also fleshed out very well and make entertaining and valuable contributions to this cleverly conceived, horrifying take on the world of reality tv that permeates our current society. There are twists aplenty, and the balance of suspense, horror, mystery and dark humor is quite satisfying. Rankin(who I'd never heard of before) is easily one of the best writers in this genre I have ever come across. His storytelling combined with Dell'edera's wonderfully expressive and bold pure pencil and ink style incite a creepy yet fun environment to throw yourself into. This leads me to Dell'edera's artwork.

Werther Dell'edera(another name I'd never seen) displays a firm grasp on what sort of disturbing images and creative perspectives leave the reader feeling truly uneasy. A job well done.

I would recommend this graphic novel to any fan of Constantine or suspenseful horror mysteries in general. It's terrifying fun that will make you an instant fan of Constantine and/or creators Rankin and Dell'edera. And when you're finished with this gem of a story, check out other Constantine graphic novels(such as "Hellblazer: John Constantine - All His Engines) and the rest of the Vertigo Crime series("A Sickness in the Family" or "Area 10" for example). You won't be disappointed.

Oh and I forgot to mention how cool the size of these compact Veritgo Crime books is. They are a nice departure from the typical comic book sized graphic novels. And the fact that they are hardcovers really sends them over the top in terms of quality. Nice.

I can't remember the last time I read a graphic novel, but I'm pretty sure it's been about 10 years. It definitely won't be another 10, because I really enjoyed this and plan to find some more graphic novels to read soon. You may be familiar with the main character, John Constantine, from the comic Hellblazer or the movie based on it, Constantine. Constantine is a magician, though not the type you're used to. And he tends to use his magic to keep those trying to get out of hell in their place. In Dark Entries, Constantine is used to make some commentary on the reality television phenomenon, as he is asked to join a group of people locked in a house and see what it is that is scaring them. The art is pretty great, and there is a big twist in the story that is illustrated very well with the change of the paper color from white to black. I've enjoyed Ian Rankin's other books, so I'm not surprised that I liked the story.

Very cool small book style graphic novel. Lee Bermejo did a gorgeous cover. I love the black and white style, and its Constantine from Hellblazer. Great!
Kesalard
What a brilliant graphic novel. Now I just want MORE.

I'm ashamed to say that I've never read any Ian Rankin novel. He's on my list of authors to get to, I just haven't yet. Dark Entries, a John Constantine graphic novel in the black and white Vertigo Crime series was a quick way to get a flavor of this well regarded author playing in the supernatural sandbox of the paranormal investigator.

Dark Entries had many strengths: Rankin's characterization of the seen-it-all rebel Constantine, the sendup of asinine reality TV shows, the twists in the plot, the back stories of the secondary characters, and the minimalist but effective art style of Werther Dell'edera.
