I was raised in an English household, eating traditional, English foods - roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, meat pie and the like. I have great fondness for this food, so much so that when I visited England for the first time, I felt truly like I'd "come home." The most cherished of recipes were never transcribed by my grandmother - they simply resided in her mind, easily recalled and brought to life on demand. As a result, when Grandma passed, so did her recipes. I bought Just Like Mother Used to Make hoping to re-create the flavors and textures of my childhood - in particular, rice pudding. It was fantastic, then, when I received the book, turned to the recipe for rice pudding, followed it to the tee and - two hours later - saw my Grandma's rice pudding emerge from the oven. I could almost hear her say, "Oh, sweetheart, doesn't that look yummy?"

I love this book. Of the dozen well-used cookery books on my shelf (and when it comes to cookery I prefer books rather than internet sites because the well-thumbed recipes covered with spots of egg and flour feel more personal), this one has more bookmarks in than any other. I also love his suggestions...Amaretto rather than almond essence......cocoa to thicken and flavour gravy.....and the stories and reminiscencies which accompany the dishes are particularly enjoyable. This is a cookery book I can really relate to. Unfortunately, no recipe for Yorkshire Pudding which is the only great recipe significant by its absence. But as an ex-Yorkshire girl who makes the best on the planet...no worries!
