I was recently referred to this book via Saveur magazine. I am very delighted that I bought it, because it is a very well written, comprehensive cookbook, written by a European culinary trained and well-experienced food writer native of the U.S. Prairie Heartland. Additionally, Ms. Fertig includes a regular sprinkling of personal stories, anecdotes and quotes from pertinent others, particularly historical references. Her recipes are excellent, easy to follow and reveal both the quality of her education and training as well as her deep love for this broad area about which she writes so passionately. I previously purchased a more recently published cookbook by another author and was so disappointed that I returned it. But this, this is a true keeper! Indeed, I am so impressed, that I have picked out two other of Fertig's books, which I intend to purchase as well. I heartily recommend Prairie Home Cooking to anyone interested in the cultural interchange and culinary development of America, which largely came from its central farmland, its Heartland.

Fabulous recipes. The Pot Roast with Prunes, the Blitz Torte and more, innovative and delicious. One of my go-to books. This is sophisticated cooking using natural, seasonal ingredients, no cans of cream soup here.

enjoyed this book very much, I like the old recipes and the use of basic ingredients. Books like theses are great remembrance of how things were. More people should get back to the basics.

User friendly, but exhaustive inventory of regional dishes. Natives to the Prairie may find themselves nostalgic just seeing the recipes.

I gave this cookbook as a Christmas present to a very good German friend of mine who loves to cook and we had fun noticing the similarities between the recipes in the book and the traditional recipes of Germany.
