In my opinion it overly emphasizes using long, flowery sentences. Which makes for impressive results in some ways but it's pushing a writing style rather than building basic skills and allowing children to develop their own. Not only that but the instructions are not abundantly clear. It took too much work to decipher what the author was intending or what the lesson was supposed to be teaching.

It's a good break for my 4th grader who was getting sick of the rigors of Winning with Writing. He drew a blank when asked to think of things himself last year. He is getting practice in. I'm not sure it's that educational compared to others, and I have to translate the lesson to more technical terms and tell him the parts of speech it is talking about. Writing Strands is good for guiding them on making complex sentences. It shows them repeatedly how to compose a core sentence and add more information to it. I think in the long run it will help.

I bought this book for my 10 year old home schooled daughter. This book is not challenging at all and is way below core standards.Even my 7 year old son found this book boring.

I recommend the "All you need to teach" series by Macmillan Teacher Resources

The Writing Stands course has been less painful for me than my son. The first few lessons were on following directions. This proved much more difficult for him than the actual writing assignments. The lessons placed the responsibility for their accurate completion on his squarely on his shoulders. Once those lessons were complete, things settled down to a relatively easy way to teach creative writing to my son.

I could see where the author wanted to go, and it's a good concept, but the ironic thing is that the first lesson of Level 3 is, "How to follow instructions". I'm 37 years old with 4 college degrees, and I had to re-read the instructions several times over to figure out what they wanted.

We didn't start this curriculum from the beginning and dove into Level 3, so Maybe if you start with Level 1 it Might help?

Also, it seemed that the instructions were a bit... sarcastic? Or, maybe it seemed that the author was "talking down" to the student. For example: [Not a direct quote, because I swapped it on PaperBackSwap.com...] "Now, if you didn't get that, go back and re-read the last paragraph 3 times till you do."

If you are looking to break out of the traditional worktext mold in educating your child/children, this book may be a great place to start.
You'll find this series, beginning with level 3, recommended by many home education authors.

As another reviewer noted, the humor is dry... BUT that should not keep you from trying this great resource. My 9 yr. old daughter (4th grade-ish) has no problem following the directions... although that may mean reading a section two times. She is able to follow the program - working two to three times a week - with no assistance from me. It encourages independent thinking and allows the child to work on his own. This is a great help for any homeschooling family, but especially those with multiple children.

This is NOT complete language arts curriculum. We use this along with Primary Language Lessons and Sequential Spelling.

Most importantly, my daughter's confidence and writing ability have improved since beginning WS3.

Highly recommended.

My 3rd grade son has struggled with writing, so this book is a godsend. It breaks it down incrementally in a way that has (so far) kept him from balking. The length given for the assignments and the sassy - kid focused - language make him willing and able to do these on his own. As a college-level composition teacher, I find this book to be brilliant.
We get these done in fifteen minutes. Great way to squeeze in what we need in a painless way.
