Organization and Governance in Higher Education is one of the primary teaching and research references in the study and practice of post secondary education. Research in higher education has provided new insights and recommendations for the management of postsecondary institutions. In addition to maintaining the strength and integrity of prior readers by continuing the coverage of classical theories and traditional models, the Fifth Edition provides updated reading to broaden the scope of the reader. New selections include current perspective on campus governance and institutional change.

Because of the complex nature of the postsecondary institution, this reader creates eight subject area lenses. Each lens allows the reader to engage the specific paradigms and phenomena related to that aspect of higher education. The areas are arranged in the following order: classic organization theory, traditional administrative and governance models, campus climate and culture, leadership analysis, management principles, institutional change and assessment, perspectives on race and gender, and critical approaches to organizational governance.

Features include:

New sections on organization change, diversity, and postmodern critique Blends traditional "core" readings with numerous contemporary readings. Readings aid in understanding the multiple nuances of how colleges are organized, governed and administered Readings aid in understanding the multiple nuances of how colleges are organized, governed and administered Serves as a single-volume resource on higher education governance for both students and practitioners

This is the worst designed book ever. So large and heavy to carry around. Difficult to read if sitting on couch or in bed. Instead I looked for articles on line and printed. Overall some good articles inside but others are a complex read. Happy I rented this one!

As others have said, this is an excellent collection, but the format of the text makes it incredibly cumbersome to use for practical purposes.

This is a great collection of essays on governance. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to read. Instead of using two columns on a page the way they did with the 5th edition, the lines run across the full length of the page...too long to track well and find the beginning of the next line, making dense reading even more difficult. I've ended up tracking down the original articles to save my eyes and sanity.

Areal page turner (sarcasm). In reality, the text is a keeper if you write on HE issues. Price was too high, but what can you do, it was required reading,

This is a great resource for higher education, and the price was highly competitive. Thank you!

This book was overly complex and dry. I felt the reiteration of a lot of points over and over to be unnecessary. Then some parts were written (in my opinion) to sound overly elevated. Huge book I had to read for my Master's and I have to say I didn't think it was great at all. Too verbose and extensive. I could have summed all of that up in a book 1/3 the size and added more application that was relevant.
Though you can find many of the articles elsewhere or comparable writings, this is a great resource outlining major issues related to University Org. and Governance.
