While this book is written about school superintendents, it provides invaluable information to anyone going into educational leadership. Polka and Litchka use captivating stories of superintendents who became "professional victims" of their school districts. Professional Victim Syndrome is defined as "...the condition confronted by many educational leaders, especially superintendents of schools, who are subjected to a career crisis in which their professional reputation may be tarnished and they have the ultimate challenge to survive as both a leader and a person" (Polka & Litchka, 2008, p. xii).

The Dark Side is based on research conducted by Polka and Litchka with school superintendents in both New York and Georgia. It is imperative that educational leaders have the ability to survive the stress that is associated with their positions. Personal resiliency is a necessity. To that end, Polka and Litchka developed COMPASS, an acronym for their survival guide. Like the navigational compass, Polka and Litchka's system provides leaders with techniques for dealing with crisis when it arises but also the means to avoid crisis. COMPASS stands for composure, optimism, mentoring, principles, awareness, support and self-actualization. The stories are concise, they keep you engaged and the strategies provide the foundation for success as an educational leader.

The book is a fast, easy read with lots of insight and perspective. As a board member I feel the book helped my understand the superintendent - school board relationship from the superintendent's point of view. I can see how easy it is for the superintendent - school board relationship to take a turn for the worse when micromanaging, personnel issues, politics, personal agendas, and exercise of newfound power of new board members come into play. It also drives home the importance of having a joint vision and clear communication as well as creating an environment and culture where the superintendent can do his / her job.

The Dark Side of Educational Leadership: Superintendents and the Professional Victim Syndrome

The Dark Side of Educational Leadership is a MUST READ for anyone who is considering entering the field of Educational Leadership. While the case studies certainly focus on the Superintendency, it is a valuable ready for all players in the game of education. Beyond aspiring and current Superintendents, this book should be required reading for anyone who is considering running for their local Board of Education.

Polka and Litchka have interviewed a wide range of current and former Superintendents from two very different states (New York and Georgia). The raw data from the surveys as well as the in depth stories of these Superintendents provides a unique view in the "Dark Side of Educational Leadership."

The book, while academic in it's nature, is not a difficult read and would make for a great text in a variety of classroom situations. I give this book five stars and will certainly be recommending it to my colleagues who are considering similar career paths in Educational Leadership.
