I wish I'd found this book as a freshman... my life would have been so much easier!

This book gives clear, concise advice that gets right to the point. Other books I've read about studying make suggestions and give lots of advice but they don't explain clearly how this advice can be incorporated into your time. But this book says: 'do this on weekdays...' and 'do this on the weekend...' - Simple. I don't want to have to read a study skills book and then have to work out my own system, just tell me what to do and I'll do it!

At the end of the book he says 'Think of a specific topic that is covered in one of your college courses. If you follow all of the advice that I have given to you in this book then you will encounter this topic again and again and again...' then he lists all of the times you will have gone over this topic if you follow the advice in the book. He then compares this with the number of times a student with a poor approach would come across the topic (maybe just once, when he/she heard it for the first time in class). I liked this part because not only does he tell you how to get studying right, he explains how his advice is working.

I would recommend reading this book just before you start a new school year or semester, and put the advice into practice from the beginning.

A minor criticism I would have is that there isn't much mention of the use of computers or the internet and how to make best use of these type of resources.

As co-author of Making A's in College, I am always pleased to see good guides to building strong study skills. Before you invest thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars in college, it makes sense to be sure your skills are ready for the challenge.

The organization of this book into `Six Days' makes building good study habits seem to be an achievable task, and Dr. Davies's contrast between the typical approaches of poor students and good students is very helpful. Any student who goes to college without reading a book such as this one, in my opinion, risks wasting a lot of effort---these study/learning skills are that important.

The emphasis on dividing tasks into manageable chunks, being an active learner, and frequent reviews (which is called `revisiting' in this book) is very good--these are all important principles that students should understand.

However, we've found that just telling students what to do is not as helpful as providing illustrations and examples. For example, when the author says `make good notes,' he doesn't provide examples or guidance on how to improve this important skill. And this book offers no solutions for combating digital distraction, a growing problem for today's students.

Finally, American students should know that this book seems written for the British system of higher education and its schedule, which is quite different from the American one. Multiple-choice exams, for example, are rare (or unknown)in the UK, but are very common here--but there is no mention in this book of useful tactics for taking such tests. And very few American students get several weeks at the end of the term for `final revision,' so students in the US may be slightly befuddled at some of the recommendations about preparing for final exams.

Overall, this is an excellent guide to what students `should' do, though it could be more specific about how to achieve those worthwhile goals.

This is a really good study guide. This is not a textbook giving you different ideas or options to improve your study skills. This is a book with direct instructions or actions to do that will effectively improve your skills. In all my classes I am sitting at an "A". It is not a long read and it is interesting. This is the best study guide I have found.

A very different approach to usual study guides, this book doesn't repeat the same old information, but recognises the reality of a busy student lifestyle, and clearly shows how to incorporate studying into that. It gives detailed instructions on how to structure and focus each study session for maximum effect in minimum time, and how to tackle large pieces of coursework, revision and exams.
I've recommended this book to many of my students who want to improve their grades.

I'm in the navy going through the nuclear pipeline and at first I struggled. Left "A" school with a 2.7. Went to nuclear power school and got a 2.4 on the easiest test. Then I found this book, by the time I took comp I was a 3.4 student. Great book I highly recommend it.

Nice job done very practical and effective techniques very useful in hard colleges I wish I had found this sooner.

Entire content based on opinions of the author - not one fact or tangible lesson to learn. Bought the text as a resource for teaching study skills. There are much better free texts on university websites that are better grounded.
Simple, practical and a must-have!!

This book is giving me the competitive edge over other college students. I can now use my study time more productively and enjoy my free time without having to dread over some assignment.

Worth every penny!
