This book has some good parts and bad parts. I'll just talk about the parts. I've used this book for my general physics course and found this book does a poor job in preparing me to build a foundation in physics. I've struggle to understand in-text problems that are suppose to test from what you just read -but they don't. For example, in the chapter D.C. Circuits a practice problem ask for you to solve a current with two batteries in series (and resisters) with positive ends facing each other: the book dosnt explain if the batteries are in serries you must add them and if the like terminals face then you subtract the lower voltage. This lack of explanation forces me to research online which isn't bad if I had free time but i don't, like most full time students. This is not the only problem: there have been problems in gasses and fluids where a knowledge in general chemistry was needed... this is suppose to be a Intro book and should teach as if no prior knowledge is known. If this book is required for your class find a book to supplement this book or hopefully you have good professor that can fill in the gaps.
This is a great introductory text with good explanations and illustrations. It was assigned to cover both semesters of my introductory physics series in college. For one of those semesters I had a teacher who was uninterested in teaching and very unskilled at explaining, but by reading the chapters and doing the practice problems I did well in the class even though I learned next to nothing in lecture. You do have to take an active approach, though; don't just read, but work through the example problems in the text yourself and check your work and reasoning against the example solutions. Don't just read over the solution.

A potential criticism is that many of the end-of-chapter problems require thinking beyond the information presented in the chapter. It can be frustrating, because the problems seem different than what was explained in the text, but they are solvable with the concepts presented and some thought. Working these kinds of problems forced me to think through the concepts I was learning rather than just plugging and chugging with formulas. Fortunately, many of the problems (I think most of the odd-numbered problems?) have solutions in the back, and some have explanations as well, so even if you are stuck on an even problem you can find a similar odd-numbered problem and figure it out from the answer.
This book is far too condensed to be of much use. It's cheaper, and the reading assignments feel less intimidating (4-5 pages instead of 20), but you spend just as much time reading those 4-5 pages as you'd spend reading 20 in a different text. You'll also be more frustrated and less enlightened at the end of it.

One of the maddening things this book does is it refers constantly to stuff that exists in previous chapters, figures, examples, and blurbs. You wind up flipping through the book looking for the pieces of the puzzle before you can even begin to understand what the text is telling you. Also, when you're looking for equation 26.2, you're sure to be tripped up several times by running across figure 26.2, tactic 26.2, or example 26.2. So... the book makes you constantly flip back and forth and then makes it as difficult as possible to find what you're looking for.

Our class kept encountering wrong answers in the back of this book. It's not very fun to do a difficult electricity or magnetism problem, then redo it for hours because you don't realize the answer in the back is incorrect.

I was very glad I had access to a complete copy of Giancoli's Physics for Scientists and Engineers. I eventually gave up on Essential University Physics (except for the problem sets) and did all my learning from Giancoli. It's huge and expensive, but it lays everything out in great detail.

My advice: if this textbook is absolutely required for class, rent it. If it's just required for homework, borrow it from your school's library (most bigger schools have a restricted section that lets you look at the course textbook) and write down the problems you need to do. Use the money you've saved to purchase online access to or a used copy of a better textbook, like Giancoli (or some others people have recommended).

Purchase this textbook only if you are already familiar with this subject and just want a condensed refresher that takes up 1/3 of the shelf space.
