Wireless is emerging as the core collaboration and decision-making platform for the distributed, self-organizing groups that will transform business. These "digital swarms" are already emerging; with tomorrow's 4G wireless technology, they will truly come of age. Enterprises will need to understand wireless communications in a new way: not simply as an opportunity to improve productivity, but as a core driver of radical organizational change.

Scott Snyder helps us see around the corner of wireless technology-no mean feat. He explains why advances in 4G and beyond will profoundly change the way we play, work, and live. Managers ignore digital swarms at their peril, especially the killer-bee scenario that will more than sting. Major shifts will emerge in markets, business models, and indeed society after digital swarms start to buzz. Snyder shows you how to catch the wave rather than be washed ashore, using clear examples, compelling arguments, intriguing scenarios, and sound business advice. I highly recommend this book.

Leading scenario planner and wireless expert Scott A. Snyder helps you prepare for a wireless revolution that may prove even more disruptive than the Internet revolution. Writing for strategists, executives, and board members, Snyder reveals why wireless will affect your business more profoundly than you realize, helps you assess your organization's current wireless readiness ("WiQ"), and prepares you to leverage wireless far more fully. Snyder explains how distributed self-organizing "digital swarms" will gain increasing power and authority, and what that will mean to the business. He reviews three profound yet differing scenarios for the impact of 4G wireless: convergence, collision, and confluence. Based on this foundation, he shows how to organize for success in the new wireless era; and previews tomorrow's "killer" swarm applications. You'll learn to recognize, monitor, and anticipate early signals of wireless-driven change and successfully lead a "swarming" organization that looks as if it can't possibly be led.

This book was written in 2009. My review has four years of hindsight.

There are a lot of future scenarios outlined in the book. It is interesting to see that some of the predictions of the future have come true, while others missed the mark by a wide margin.

The author gets a little geeky at book's end explaining some of the technologies which will not appeal to a broad audience. For example, if you've ever stayed up at night wondering about things like spectral efficiency of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access, then there is something in here for you. I'm not one of those people.

The last line of the summary on the Amazon page states, "You'll learn to recognize, monitor, and anticipate early signals of wireless-driven change and successfully lead a 'swarming' organization that looks as if it can't possibly be led." I'm not sure the book delivers on that, and even if it did, you don't need to predict where things will be four years from the date of publication... it isn't futuristic anymore.

Scott defines the emergence of Digital Swarms from the intersection of 4G wireless technologies and coming social, economic and political transformations in how people leverage and control communications in the future.

The key objectives of the book are:

- Understanding the Digital Swarm
- Interpreting the business impact
- Innovating around the Opportunities
- Transforming your business

Scott articulates several insightful scenarios for the future and provides examples of "killer applications" that bridge these likely scenarios. He also provides tools to help businesses exploit this huge opportunity as it unfolds.

Scott's background as an entrepreneur, Wharton professor, and strategy consultant uniquely position him to understand and leverage Digital Swarms ... and even more powerfully ... communicate those insights into actionable strategies for readers of this book.

This is a must read for all technologist of the future but is also critical for business leaders in technology and non-technology companies. It is as applicable from the iPhone app developer to the venture capitalist to CEO's of Global 1000 companies.

Excellent read for corporate managers, investors and business strategists on how 4G will impact consumer and corporate behavior, change market dynamics. Not overly technical, good 1000-10,000 foot view.

Everyone recognizes that wireless is changing the way the world operates... this is the first book that I've seen that doesn't use the "crystal ball" method to predict the future. Instead, it describes in great detail two very different worlds that we could potentially find ourselves living in - and what to look for to determine if we are moving in that direction. In this fast moving market, being able to "see" the future a few months ahead of the competition is priceless, and this book will help you get there first.

Whether you are a healthcare exec thinking about the future of remote patient monitoring or a retail brand manager exploring how customer swarms will change the way you go to market, this book will help you think through future implications for your business and plan now for an optimal and flexible wireless strategy.

Free of jargon and consultant-ese, and equally appropriate for someone "new" to wireless as well as a seasoned expert looking for a different perspective. What more can you ask for from a quick, easy read?
