3. Description An increasing number of successful manufacturing companies use the notion of modules and product platforms. This book describes modular design, the driving forces behind it and how it can help companies shorten developmental lead times, manage a high degree of customization, and reinforce product identify.

In an increasingly complex, customer value-driven marketplace, a progressively greater number of product variants has become one of the most important cost drivers for many manufacturing companies. Its negative effects are manifested throughout the entire organization. The authors introduce the concept of modular design within the product platform approach, intended to increase company efficiency while reducing costs and time to market. This book presents a five-step method for creating modular product platforms. Organizational benefits from this method include reduced product development lead time, concurrent development of the product and production system, parallel design and manufacturing, improved quality, easier service and upgrading, and reduced material and overhead costs.

Compact, concise, and well written. However, it presents only success cases and only mechanical products - which are the least complex, easiest problems in the spread of today's technology. What is missing was a deeper discussion of the real-world frustrations and competitive dangers that come with attempts to design a one-size-fits-all modular solution. For a public example, read up on the current "Joint Strike Fighter" and "Littoral Combat Ship" projects. These were both started with great enthusiasm to be "modular" platforms exactly as proposed by the authors here... and have ended up as nightmares. Personally, I have worked on several smaller attempts at modular product design that did not go so well, both in the computer hardware and software domains. Nevertheless, the book is well written. My hope is that the authors (with the benefit of additional experience since they wrote this book) will write a second edition that takes on some of these ugly "paint yourself into a corner" problems in more detail. Ie: more guidance on when/what NOT to to modularize.
