I suspect a minority of Apple users purchase instructional manuals (most young people don't even consult the Help menu). Still, some of us hard-copy hold-outs require such manuals or, at the very least, learn a few important things from them (above all, how to stay out of "trouble").

My criteria are:

1. a lucid style that eschews non-productive, flaccid humor in favor of useful information;
2. a "guardedly authoritative" approach, or a willingness on the author's part at times to "tell" the reader what or what not to do and at other times to suggest which "options" may be preferable to others;
3. a substantial trouble-shooting and problem-solving section;
4. a book that manages to practice economy without sacrificing comprehensiveness (some manuals seem padded with "bloat"; others fit in a back pocket but rarely answer your most urgent questions);
5. finally, the most recent edition, informing the reader of the latest developments in Apple's evolving technology (the lifetime expectation of a manual should be no more than a year or two).

Mr. Miser's iPod Touch book, late 2011, 3rd edition, comes closest to satisfying these criteria. It gets my vote as the best navigational guide for Apple's latest (occasionally perilous) iPod Touch running iOS5 in conjunction with OSX (10.7, or "Lion").

I am old school buyer who likes the "hand feel" of an Owners Manual when I buy something. All too frequently today, whatever you buy comes with an "online" owners manual/user guide to read or print out while trying to follow, step by step instructions about "how to" do something.

This book, covers it all and I love it! I refer to it often and it is easy to carry to where it is convenient for me to use it. It's amazing the capabilities that the Ipod has and the color photos and easy to follow instructions made this a perfect book for me. There were SO many books from which to choose. It was an actual Apple employee who told me that they had bought this book for their mother when they gifted them with an Ipod. That was a good enough recommendation for me. I am completely happy with my purchase and have gotten my money back 10 times over in what I've saved in wasting time looking it up online or calling Apple support to field my questions.

I don't often write reviews.

I SO need a primer to help me understand how my ipod touch (3rd generation, 64G) works.

Perhaps (over the past twenty-plus years) I've developed a bias that "manuals" and "user guides" so often seem to be written for people who already understand the device and it's software, and need some help tweaking different functions. I'm no tweaker! I need how-do-I-turn-this-thing-on assistance! I need a primer!

When I searched amazon.com for a book/resource, this book description: My iPod touch (covers iPod touch running iOS 5) (3rd Edition) seemed the most helpful for me, and it did not disappoint!

10 minutes right out of the box, a quick glance through the index, and I had two (TWO I tell you!) answers for questions I've previously not been able to find clues, let alone any specific "how-to" info.

Execellently organized, and seemingly thouroughly put through the Ipod Touch paces, this is not a book to sit down and read cover to cover. It's a manual for how-to-use; and a ready reference when I don't recall exactly how to use one of the bazillion different features available on my Ipod Touch.

GREAT REFERENCE!

I intend to fully take advantage of this info, and report back in an update for how right or wrong I find this resource. In the meanwhile, if you are truly an ipod touch novice, you can't go wrong with this book!

It's hard to fault this manual. I would have given it five stars except I feel that the index could be more comprehensive. The rule of thumb for the index of a technical manual should be no less than 10 percent of the total number of pages. But this sure beats the Apple User Manual for the iPod touch which does not contain an index of any kind. I reccomend this manual to anyone who wishes to take full advantage of the iPod Touch's many features.

This book has been a real helpful tool for me. It covers nearly everything you could possibly want or need to know about the ipod touch 5th generation. I am running ios 8 which is not covered in this book, but never the less most operrations are identical to earlier ios versions. I like the fact that the author offers his personal help link if needed. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is as clueless as I was about how to navigate the apps and menus and in general, operate the ipod touch 5th generation. Thank you Brad

My iPod Touch 4th Generation device is far more complex than its tiny size suggests. As often is the case Apple supplies very little by way of instruction material, so I needed more. This book contains a sizeable amount of information, but due to the constant changes in the operating system (now at version 6) some parts of the book become outdated quickly. Besides, the latest iPod is up to the 5th generation, including new built-in apps and capabilities, along with the removal of at least one useful app. Unless one never intends to avail himself of the free OS updates and upgrades, this book is nearly obsolete.

I bought this as well as the 'Dummies' book. My bf, who is not computer savvy, recently bought an iPod 4g and wanted to learn more. I ordered both books so that he could have a choice. He loves this book and found it very easy to read and understand. He especially likes the pictorial presentation, as well as the written explanations. Both features make this book worth every dime. (P.S.I kept the Dummies book for myself.)
Very helpful.
