Kenneth Macksey's Tank Warfare is the definitive history of the policy-makers and the strategists who talked tanks. Macksey gives the reader of Tank Warfare a sense of being a part of the tank crews fighting for their lives. Perhaps even more important, it is the story of tank warfare itself - the split-second decisions, the battle-weary tank crews, the mud. Although use of tank-like vehicles was envisioned long before World War I (in 1903, for example, H. G. Wells published an article entitled "The Land Ironclad"), it was during that war to end all wars that tanks became a fact of modern military life and strategy

This is a well thought out and well written short history of the tank and it's impact on warfare. This work includes not only the hardware but the theories that affected their use from the first British officers tasked with guidelines to use the new machines of war in WWI, to the latest insights gained the the short violent conflicts involving Israel and it's neighbors. This work does not go beyond the theories of the 1970's but it is still very much a worthwhile read. I found the theories that evolved from generation to generation to be the most fascinating aspect of this book. The various ways that tanks can be used nod the technological and theoretical successes and dead ends were examined here. I highly recommend this book those students of the history of armored warfare.

The descriptions the writer put in the book were so vivid - I almost thought I was there.
I can't get the image of them scraping the human remains out of those tanks and then painting it so the new crew wouldn't know anyone died in it.
What amazing men we had fighting for us.
